I know this is quite early because we don't have our scores but I am curious what other peoples opinions are on retaking the ACT.

How close would your score have to be to your expected score to not retake it?

For example I got a 34 on a practice test and I think that I will probably retake anything 30 or lower. But if I get a 31 or 32 or a 33 it will be a harder decision.

I'm curious what other peoples thoughts are on this

It would depend on which school you are applying to. Take a look at the entrance averages for ACT scores and you should get an idea of whether or not it will be a good idea to retake. In my case, my school’s average ACT is 28, and I scored a 30, so I decided not to retake.

I made a goal for myself the first time I took the ACT (October 2009). If I scored a 32 or lower, I would retake. I scored a 32 and followed my rule.

Going into senior year this year… I’ve taken 10+ practice tests (real past tests) and have scored very well on all of them except for the science section. This was my second time taking the act and I got a 30 on the first. I’m expecting a 30-32 on this one. If I can some how learn to get my science up to a 33 I can easily, and I mean easily, get a 34+ on the test… For the rest of the summer I’m reviewing for science by reading science text books containing all the possible science subjects on the act. I’m not letting that one section fk my whole score. Its happened twice now and its not happening again. And how the fk did I screw up math! On my last two practice tests I got a 34/35 on math now I’m lucky if I get a 30. Honestly the ACT is all about if you get a lucky sitting.

I’m most likely retaking no matter what.
Because this is my first time taking it, and I only took 2 practice tests as preparation.
both from sparknotes, 27 1st try, 26 2nd try.
Science killed me both times but I think I did better on the real thing.
I still think I will do much better in the fall, after I prepare over the summer.

Ohh prepare over the summer is an understatement. I’ve got to take 3 SAT II’s september/ACT again… I just hope for 600+ on all SAT II’s because colleges really could give a damn about them

If I get below a 30, but like 28 or 29, I would be pretty happy since all I’ve done was taken 1 practice test. But if I get 30 or above i will be really happy and wont retake lol

Hmm, now Im starting to get worried…everyone seems to have taken a bunch of practice tests and still score around a 30. This is my first time for ACT cold. I hope I got around a 32/33 but im not sure anymore after reading this thread.

I’m retaking in September, no matter what my score is.* This was my first time and I barely did any prep… as in I crammed the week before… well mostly the night before.

*That is, unless I made a perfect score, which definitely did not happen haha.

I think I’ll retake regardless because I did not study/review for this one at all, mostly because I could not find the time to review or do any practice tests due to AP exam, finals, SAT subjects, college essays etc. But, If I get a 33/34+ on it, I dont think I will retake it. But most likely, I will.

anything but 36 I retake. mostly because I still have 3 years of high school. though if by some miracle I get a 35, I might call it quits in the ACT realm :)
