Hey everyone, I was wondering if reteaching myself the basics of mathematics is going to work? I am thinking of going all the way from counting to at least algebra. The reason why is because I am thinking of going to trade school but the main issue I have is that math was my worst subject in school. i am 22 years old and i am going to start working soon as a sandblaster but I realized I need to do something in order to make more money. I have been sandblasting for 3 years but i quit my previous job to move to LA to be with my boyfriend. i have another sandblasting job lined up. I hated school to the point where I tried running away from home multiple times, part of that was because of the alcoholism within my family, eventually I graduated high school on time due to having to take online classes that were paced by my own direction rather than based on the pace of a teacher. the website was called Nova net. I don’t know what trade to go into. I bought some books on amazon to give me a refresher course all the way from counting to calculus
Mastering Algebra: An Introduction
Math for Real Life: Teaching Practical Uses for Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry
by Jim Libby (Author)
From Counting to Calculus: A Complete Course in Mathematics
These are the books i bought. what do you guys think? Is it possible to reteach myself?
I had to take an IQ test in high school because i was in special ed- i have hearing and memory issues and i wear hearing aids. That is part of the reason i suck at math. The IQ test showed that i had normal intelligence, a lot of the skills were average but my vocabulary and reading comprehension skills were above average. My math skills were below average, at a 9th grade level.
Sure it’s definitely possible, though some people benefit from a teacher/tutor/real human. Post in the homeschooling forum. What to use for greatest efficiency will depend on your specific weakness, your current skill level, and your goals.
If you want to learn concepts more deeply starting at a prealgebra level, check out the prealgebra videos by Richard Rusczyk at AoPS https://artofproblemsolving.com/videos/prealgebra . There’s also online practice on the website, Alcumus, as well as a text. I’d probably start with the videos and Alcumus – both free – perhaps with the Alcumus difficulty level set to easy.
Check out this article…i think the answer is yes.
