William B. Garrett entered the Naval Academy as a nervous plebe on July 8, 1955. Last week, after a 52-year career that included commanding a submarine and serving as vice academic dean and political science professor at the academy, he cleaned out his desk and headed into retirement.

The soft-spoken and gentlemanly Annapolis resident leaves with the distinction of being, by his count, one of only about 10 academy employees to have received the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award....

Thank you, GreatAmerican. My d (a 2012 candidate) and I are learning so much from your posts!

Dr. Garrett is an amazing person. I am happy for his retirement and long time service, but I am sad to see him go. He really cared about each MIDN and wanted them to learn as much as he could teach. In the one semester I had him, he struck me as a remarkable person and always seemed interested in everyone. He also had a sense of humor and a liking for telling "USNA sea stories....When I was a MIDN."

He epitomized what it meant to be an officer and a gentleman.
