Retrospection: a person is not educated who has not learned....

I came across this quote which relates to this topic and adds some insight…

The only goal we have in our family in regard to our D. undergard education is for her to continue in a way she started and do not get derailed by anything or anybody. It is impossible to learn everything, staying focused should help her to learn good what she needs to acheive her goal.

Slightly off topic…

There’s a big difference between being educated and being intelligent!

I love this quote from the Marquis de Lafayette: “I read, I study, I examine, I listen, I reflect, and out of all this I try to form an idea into which I put as much common sense as I can.”

To march to the beat of his own drum. Don’t let others define success or what’s the “right” thing to do in your life for you.

I came across this bit on what a (Liberal) education means from the Kenyon 2005 commencement address by David Foster Wallace.

Be sure to read the rest. It is good.

I never heard of him til his tragic passing. he wrote some great refreshing honest stuff. I look forward to reading more of him.

Definitely disagree with needing an indepth knowledge of WESTERN civilization (post #18)- there is a much bigger world out there and it is better to realize that than have all the times and places of Europeans known.

The well educated person will know of concepts foreign to his/her culture- such as history and religion and arts, music… along with many other things common to all cultures (eg math, science).

I agree: I think an educated person appreciates and seeks to understand the robes of the world as if they were their own.
