Hey thehistoryfan,
I know a couple of people who are/were new uppers. They all are happy they came to Andover, and are doing well. I’ve heard a few complain about not applying as repeat sophomores. Personally, I think it would be much better to apply as a repeat sophomore. The social transition’s easier, you get a more full experience, and it’s easier to get in as a new sophomore than a new 11th grader (that’s the hardest year to get in for). So, I’d seriously consider repeating.

Our grade at Andover is pretty cool. It’s a pretty good mix of people. Our grade is definitely more athletic than artsy, but there are plenty of artsty people. I feel like I lucked out with our grade. They’re a nice group of kids.

The current freshman (or the kids that you’d be with if you repeated a year) aren’t as cool as 2015. Several of my best friends are in 2016, and I’m not saying everyone in 2016 is a bad kid. I just don’t think they’re as good as 2015 is as a group. They’ve done a couple things as a class which makes me think they’re a little obnoxious.

Andover doesn’t allow boarding students to have jobs while school is in session. Personally, I wish they did because there are lots of local businesses in Andover that I would love to work at and make some pocket money. It also annoys me because the way I’ve made pocket money my whole life is through working, and not being allowed to do that means no pocket money. When I’m home with friends, I have to borrow money constantly–something I didn’t have to do pre-Andover when I had 3 jobs. My advice would be to get a really high paying summer job and work lots of hours.

I guess I understand that they wouldn’t let you have a job. I just always had this idea that i’d eventually pay my parents back or use my own money at Andover if i get in.

I can answer my own question now, that tree formation is called the “Pythagorean Arbors” and it is a proof for the Pythagorean theorem. That’s Andover for you. Even the trees have to be smart.

Hey, I’m just wondering about student/dorm life. For example, is there some free time for people to just hang out together? And what are the policies on cell phones/internet? That kind of stuff. Are you good friends with everyone from your dorm? Really anything on student life is great. Thanks!
