Returning student after many years.

Hi, I am currently 23 and stayed away from school for 3 years because I wasn't doing well, didn't know what I wanted to do, and I couldn't afford it. I'm just curious, how serious will Michigan take my previous college stats from 2008-2009 when I am doing much better now? By much better, I mean I should have about a 3.7 GPA at an OOS CC (Bergen Community in Jersey) after this semester with 1 more semester to go. Obviously I am shooting for straight A's every semester so that is self-explanatory to go for next semester, too.

Gvon89- I am in the same boat as you with time off but I am closer to 15 years off. It is my understanding that as long as you have a good number of college credits that is what they will look at, and trends are important. So if you are trending upward that can only help.

Thank you mgoblue 734, but can a Michigan Student/Alum please give me some insight?

If you mean your HIGHSCHOOL stats from 08-09, they will give considerably more weight to your college GPA, which is in range for transfer. You will want to write an explanation, however, of what you’re doing different, etc. ;)

If you meant that in 08-09 you had poor COLLEGE grades…that will factor into the college transfer GPA and be given consideration, and will cause them to really want to seem demonstrated and sustained improvement.

(PS Also not a student, but two of my son’s friends decided in JR. year of HS to “self educate” and dropped out of a magnet program. They both kind of screwed around a bit, and then went to community college. They each did very well at community college, and each were accepted as transfers, and I know at least one had written quite a detailed explanation about his “experimental” approach to highschool ;)

Thank you for the response kmcmom13! I had many things going on Freshman year in 2008 (undecided of what I wanted to do, drug addict roommate who got kicked out the following semester, deaths of my dog and closest uncle right before I graduated high school, along with other influences of my poor GPA) so hopefully including all of these factors will help the people who review the applications realize I simply got off to a rough start but now I am serious :]
