Returning Students Fin Aid- When?

When do returning students usually apply for fin aid for their sophomore/subsequent years? is it early like January (like 1st years)? Just curious to see what it typically is?

Yes. In our experience returning students apply for aid early in the new year.

At my D1’s school the fin aid paperwork was due a little later for subsequent years (March/April). This year (2010) we didn’t get the actual FA award until August (!!!) and there were errors so caused some scrambling. They had promised FA by mid June. I am hoping this year will be better.

So I guess the answer is, check with your school. At my daughter’s school April would cause her to miss out on some aid, including our State grant.

August - yikes!!

My daughter’s college expects returning students to get their financial aid materials in by late February. My son’s college does not expect it until end of April. That information will probably be on the financial aid offices webpages of your child’s college somewhere. In our case, if I have to do one kid’s FA apps early, I may as well do them both early. Taxes and financial aid apps… it’s all one big fun event! :p

However, the Jan/Feb funfest coming up will be my LAST! Woot woot!

In California, students receiving CalGrant must file their FAFSA each year by March 2nd regardless of their individual school’s financial aid deadline.

Congrats, 'rentof2!

The correct answer is check YOUR child’s school. The deadlines for returning students vary wildly…even moreso that for incoming freshmen. AND if your child is a returning junior or senior…check again. We had deadlines CHANGE (move earlier) for one of our kids from the previous year (returning junior deadline was earlier than when the kiddo was a returning soph).

CHECK your schools…
