Returning to the US

Hi there,

I graduated from an American institute about 3 years ago and moved home shortly afterwards to take up a job. I'm getting itchy feet again and I'd like to move back to the US at least for a little while to get more work experience.

I tried to apply for the Professional Career Training Visa, but was rejected as I graduated from an American college (none of the info given to me stated that I had to have a degree from my home country). Now, my options seem so limited. Can anyone advise me on what route to take or has any experience in this area? Thanks in advance.

Will your employers send you to the US for a post-graduate degree? That would be one place to start.

Welcome back to CC! :)

You are right that your work visa options are rather limited. As you discovered, J-1 visas for interns and trainees are only given to graduates of foreign universities. You’d have to apply for a “regular” work visa: the infamous H-1B, an L-visa for an intra-company transfer to the US, or an E-visa to work for a company that does significant trade with your home country.

The other option, like happymomof1 mentioned, would be to pursue a graduate degree in the US. And if you want to get a bit of work experience afterwards, there’s OPT.
