I need some advice. I have applied to four REU programs for this coming summer. I have received an acceptance letter from one school so far. However, this school is my least favorite, and I need to confirm acceptance by March 20. Even worse, I may not receive notification on the other programs until April 8. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on this (very frustrating) dilemma? Thanks for any advice!

Congratulations, Roostaj!!! I suspect you will be hearing from several other REUs by March 20th, so try to relax and make your decision in another week or so when you have more info. In the meantime, you have a great fall back position. It may be a tough summer for many students…

I’d call the other REU programs, explain your situation, and ask if they can give you any more information on your standings with them.

Thanks for the optimism ksm! However, I am doubtful that the notifications will be sent out before the 20th.

RacinReaver, I have considered contacting the other REU programs, but I don’t want to come across pushy. I guess I don’t have much choice, though. Others have suggested I simply accept the offer I have and back out if another offer comes up. But, that seems extremely unprofessional, and I don’t feel comfortable with that idea at all.

Don’t worry about appearing “pushy.” This situation actually happens pretty frequently and the REU programs know it. In fact, at least a few of the programs that my son applied to mentioned specifically on their websites that if an applicant needed a reply earlier in order to meet a deadline for another program, they could contact the program director and he/she would give them an early read on the chances they would be accepted. So go ahead and contact the other programs.

worried_mom, thank you for the inside information. I will be contacting the other programs this afternoon.
