So this year chicago has a "create your own" prompt, so do you think that allows for me to write a prompt they had last year?

I think its a bad idea. At best, its sort of a “non-adventurous” response to this question that asks you to be “original, thoughtful” and “take risk”. At worst, they may wonder if its an essay you took from one of last year’s applicants.

probably a good call

I wouldn’t reuse an old prompt. Doesn’t show ingenuity or any originality. Think of a new one if you can.

The admissions counselors read enough of those old prompts that they would want to turn any additional essays on those topics into confetti. (And if you are thinking of “Where’s Waldo?”, REALLY don’t do that one, they seemed to have a disproportionate number of applicants write on that one!). But no. They are tired of those prompts and hope to never see another essay on those topics, believe me. If you pick the “choose your own”, be fresh and original – not a retread.
