reusing essays

the reasons I want to go to Chicago, Columbia, and Reed are honestly, more or less the same. do you think it would be okay to just reuse my “Why Chicago?” essay for “Why Columbia” and “Why Reed”? Not just out of laziness…even if I wrote new ones, they would sound the same

That is strange that your Why CHI is so generic it could be reused. dd's why chicago would not make any sense if you subbed in those other schools. They are not school's she's applying to; they should have been on the short list, but just didn't get the attention from someone fully booked. If it is general about the kind of learning enviro you want and it works, then go ahead.

i'd assume so, but try to put in some details or school-specific information

well, i love reed and chicago for the replete intellectualism, and i love columbia and chicago for their core curriculums.

Dude, if they are the same reasons, go for it. I think it's pretty generally accepted that if you can re-use an essay, then you should. It's not like they weren't written by you!

I don't want to reuse my Why Chicago essay, but my other essay. I'm applying to Uconn as a safety and I'd kind of like to do the early action (just to know earlier) but the deadline is today and I don't have an essay done. These are Uconn's essay topics:
1-2 pages
-Please describe what makes you a unique individual and how these qualities can benefit the University of Connecticut Community

-Describe a person or event that has had a profound effect upon your life.

OR

-Ask and answer the one question you wish we had asked.

My Chicago essay is option #2, and I talked about crew and being a coxswain and how I had to learn to change my voice which ultimately changed my self-confidence and peopel have said it's pretty good. Can I make my own question, something along the lines of What activity has influenced you the most? and use it. I'm still wondering if it's 100% applicable and how obvious it will be that I'm reusing, since Chicago is so unique but I don't really like any of Uconn's options. And does Uconn even care? Thanks.

Don't know if it's too late, but it sounds like a good and interesting essay. Otherwise I'd choose option #1. I recently met a girl who went to Conneticut University. Is that the same or not? She loved it and highly reccommends it. I think it has a very large and lovely campus that includes wilderness studied in science classes. Also is on the water.

I think you're thinking of Connecticut College, which is in New London.

I'm talking about UConn -- Storrs, which is kind of in the middle of nowhere and started out as an agricultural school so there are a lot of cows on the lovely rural campus. Actually I think academics are supposedly pretty good for a public university.

Anyway, that's where I live and go to to high school and it's a safety... I used the essay, hoping it didn't make it to apparent. Thanks for the advice.

I'm sure you're talking about Connecticut College. I'd be applying there if I wasn't shying away from too much liberal arts... it's definitely VERY beautiful. They never fail to send us postcard after postcard of scenery to lure us onto their campus :P
