Reusing recommendations?

I'm probably going to apply a few different summer programs soon, and in all I'm looking at about seven to ten teacher/counselor recs for the applications. I'm wondering about two things:

*Do most programs have the teacher send in the rec directly or would I be able to see it first?
*I obviously am not going to ask ten different teachers for recs, so would it be OK to use the same rec letters for different applications (assuming the recs are still applicable for another summer program)?

Bumpity-bump.

Ask two or three teachers if they would be willing to write a recommendation for you. Then hand each a stamped envelope to each program you want them to send a copy to. Ask them if they prefer to mail it in directly or hand the sealed envelopes to you. Unless they show it to you, you would not be able to see them. Good luck!

Glad to see this thread as I had a similar question for next fall. Does this typically work with teacher recommendations during the college application process as well? What I mean is, are most college teacher recommendations free form letters that can be sent to more than one school, as opposed to a specific form to be filled out. I understand the courtesy of providing addressed, stamped envelopes to the teachers to make it easier for them.

With my son likely applying to 10+ schools next year, I would be interested in hearing how others handled the need for multiple teacher recommendations. How many did you use from any one teacher? Do they write them “To whom it may concern” or is there a better opening you have seen that still provides for universal use? I assume colleges know that some recommendations are being used over and over.

Any further guidance you can provide is appreciated.

twoby2013, for every school that’s on the CommonApp the teacher can submit online, which makes it very easy for him/her. I applied to double-digit schools through the CommonApp and a couple not on the CommonApp. For these non-CommonApp schools, you will have to give the teacher a stamped, addressed envelope and ask them to send it–alternately, the school may have a way for the teacher to submit his/her rec online.
