I am in my mid 40s, married with 2 small children. I initially went to a local University around Detroit, Michigan from 1994-98 but didn’t finish with my Bachelor’s. Fast forward to 2012 and I went back but switched majors. Now I am 1 class away from my Bachelor’s in Computer Science, but haven’t been able to complete the last class because its so time consuming (60-80 hours a week plus meetings with group members, travel, etc). I have been stuck for 2 years trying to find a way to finish, but can’t because of work and family.
I have nothing to show for all my schooling and I just want some type of degree. Since the University doesn’t have Associates degrees, I am looking into reverse transferring to any local Community college to at least get my Associate’s. Problem is most all require a resisdency requirement on 15 credits or so.
I am trying to find a way to somehow get a degree, without the residency requirements.
Ultimately I wish it would be for a Bachelor’s since I am only 1 class away.
Is that some kind of required internship? I can’t think of anything else that would require the time commitment you describe.
Does your current university have any options for taking that one missing class? Could you do it in an online format or through another institution that is easier for you to get to? Could you substitute one or two different classes for the missing one? Could you do it as an independent study?
Does your current university offer the option of an Independent Major? If so, how many credits would you need to take in order to qualify as an Independent Major? Yes, your transcript and diploma won’t say you have a Comp Sci major, but you will still have all of the Comp Sci coursework except for that one missing thing.
What state are you in? Some public universities have very generous credit transfer programs that might work well for you. Check out Thomas Edison State College, Excelsior College, Charter Oak State College, and Western Governors University, and run a quick search for “college degree by exam” to see what else might pop up.
