So, my parents said that if I'm going to choose one of the performing arts as my major, I should probably choose acting and just pursue music as a hobby. I know you all reviewed some programs for me previously, but I found some more, and I'm going to ask for updates on certain programs. I can hear you all cheering...or is that groans of "MAKE UP YOUR DANG MIND"? Anyway...my Plan A is acting, Plan B is graphic design. So...mind is made up, here are the programs. Sorry for bothering you all again.

New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (Degree Program)
UMBC (BFA Acting; wouldn't have to audition b/c I'm a transfer)
St. John's U (NY; B.S. in Dramatic Arts, Film and Television)
Chapman U (Acting for Screen)
CCU
SUNY - Purchase
Marymount Manhattan
Temple
Ithaca

If anyone has reviews of these programs, updates from you or your son/daughter, a typical schedule of these programs...they would be much appreciated. Especially interested in hearing about St. John's! Thanks!

I can’t remember why it was you didn’t want to major in Musical Theatre, which is one way to combine music and theatre and make BOTH your career.

CCU offers a minor in Graphic Design. One of my D’s friends is a BFA Acting major who is minoring in Graphic Design.

Acting majors can take private voice lessons and they can and are cast in musicals.

As far as a typical schedule, here’s a link to a schedule for an MT major at CCU. There are other posts from other students to give you an idea. If you want to get in contact with an Acting major at CCU, then PM AlexaMT and she can probably help you out.

austinmtmom - THANKS so much!!! I totally forgot about that thread!

KEVP - I just don’t think that MT would be the right fit for me. Nothing against it - just not for me :)

My son is starting at Ithaca in the fall in MT, which was not his original intention. He’s an actor and a singer, and not really what you think of as an MT guy, though he does perform in musicals. But at Ithaca the MT degree is an interdepartmental double major in Acting and Vocal Performance with a minor in dance, so he’s going to do it. He could always switch to just acting, but he wants the music classes and intense vocal training also. MT at some schools has less rigorous acting classes than the BFA acting students are doing, but at Ithaca the acting classes are the same for at least the first two years.

Thanks, prodesse! I guess part of my hesitancy to major in MT is about whether I could do musicals with people who have been doing them for years. I’ve done a couple musicals, but I have nowhere near the experience others have.

I can’t figure out how to edit, so I’ll say this…if I were to do MT, I would go to CCU or Ithaca.
