We spent the weekend in NY touring SVA and Pratt. D was accepted to both as well as many others, but wants to be in NY. We found Pratt FAR superior in every way except for location, but location allows for the campus aspect which is nice. The campus has had several major renovations and today we were in the newly renovated Memorial Hall, the first day it has been used in several years. The depth of the education, number of majors offered, quality of student work, flexibilty to change/add majors and cross over to other fields, the liberal arts aspect which is not offered at SVA, well, everything even the dorms, was 100% superior at Pratt in our opinion. At SVA, you have to know day 1 what your major will be and you cannot change it without redoing freshman year in many cases since 5 of the 10 majors offered have different foundation year programs. Pratt offers at least 50 majors, including creative writing and Critical Visual studies. As a science elective, they offer chemistry of art, or even Marine biology. Every professor is working in the field. Intertnshipd are offered in junior year. Overall, it was just unbelievably impressive, and so multi-dimensional, whereas we felt SVA was completely rigid and one dimensional, and the dorms were horrendous.

My daughter could have written your post . She felt the exact same way. She is still waiting to hear from RISD, but even RISD does not have the depth of curriculum found @ Pratt. I have heard from the parent of a freshman that the fall orientation is really great; stressing safety and street smarts.
