Reviewing my college list

I've talked things over with my guidance counselor and I told her my list of colleges. She said that it was a realistic list and that it should be good enough to keep. However, the majority are top tier schools and virtually only one is pretty much a lock. I need opinions!

College List:
UPenn (ED)
Vanderbilt
Johns Hopkins
Carnegie Mellon
UVA
Cornell
Lehigh University
University of Michigan

Quick stats:
Rank: 22/631 (top 5%)
GPA: 4.35 of 4.6 (weighted)
SAT I: 650 CR / 750 M/ 710 W
SAT II: 760 Chem, (will be taking Math 2 in Nov.)
EC's: decent but no national recognition or anything spectacular
Recs: I hope they're decent
*I'm an Asian American from the suburbs of Philadelphia if that matters at all

I'd appreciate any input at all. I don't expect to get into all of them (duh!), but I hope to get into a few and pick from them (really, they're all great schools to me). Thanks!

Have you considered Tufts? It's in the middle of the pack of the universities you listed above.

I actually haven't considered Tufts, but what type of science-research opportunities do they offer? Is the campus similar to any of the ones on my current list? I'm looking at mostly science-oriented schools that are not too cut-throat but at the same time have students who are geniunely looking to succeed. Thanks for the suggestion!

'but what type of science-research opportunities do they offer? "

Many! The departments are flooded with research opportunities that are not difficult to get in the slightest bit. Professors are very friendly about this sort of matter and encourage undergraduate involvement and many consider it to be a necessity in a science education. The premeds at Tufts are competitive but at the same time are very laid back. We don't sabotage each other and are very willing to help each other out. It's an intense but happy place.

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably be looking at Tufts sometime soon, and I don't want to bother you with anymore questions.

which is your "lock" (lehigh?, Michigan?)

It's a good strong list and I think you'll do fine... it seems you are lacking a true safety, like Penn State.

If your in the Jersey suburbs, TCNJ would be a good safety

http://www.tufts.edu/med/admissions/programs_ba_md.html

here are the program details.

I think Lehigh is a safe one. I was afraid I didn't have an absolute safety, but I couldn't really find a safe, safe school that I would truly appreciate. I considered Rutgers and PSU, but I just didn't feel that thing you feel when you know it's the right school. So, do you think I should keep this list?

I really think you should apply to either rutgers or PSU just in case. The chances that you won't get into any of the schools to which you are applying are very low, but if it does happen and you have to go to a local college you might end up hating yourself. Just to be safe I'd apply.

I agree Lehigh is "pretty" safe for you but still their acceptance rate is in the 30's, I just don't know if it's safe enough. Michigan is also probably pretty safe but again I just think it's good to have a true safety.

I think your list is real good...all ivy or near ivy calibre in science/research possibilities, you just can't go wrong.

Other safety/match high quality possibilities that might fit the bill if you're dead set against RU or PSU...Case Western, Rochester, Brandeis, Wisconsin, Maryland. Boston U a little safer still.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll probably be adding another school to my list when I hear from UMich. I'll apply there in about a week to two weeks (hopefully closer to one week). If I get accepted there, I'll probably stick with this list, and if I don't get accepted, well..!

UPenn (ED) - Good chance
Vanderbilt - match
Johns Hopkins - match
Carnegie Mellon - match
UVA - match
Cornell - match/reach
Lehigh University - safety
University of Michigan - safety

pgcokie, can you give me some reasoning behind your predictions. Am I eligible for Vanderbilt because I'm Asian (I'm not 100% sure on this, but isn't their Asian population low?). So, this is a decent list?

Thanks

Might take a look at Colgate and Holy Cross both better than Lehigh.

How are Colgate and Holy Cross's science programs?
