Reviews: iOS Apps to Study for the SAT

Hey everyone, today I'm going to share my thoughts on a few of the apps for the iOS devices that I have used to study for the SAT. Keep in mind that there are more apps out there, but these are the ones that I have used myself. Also, I have used these apps on my iPhone, so I don't know how well they transfer to the iPad. Some of these apps are also available for Android and other platforms, but the prices may vary.

The Official SAT Question of the Day- The College Board (Free)[ul]
This app is probably the best app out there, as it provides a new official SAT question every day. The questions range from sentence completions to algebra questions to identifying sentence errors. The only questions not included are passage-based reading, math free-response, improving paragraphs, and essays, so you get a nearly complete set of questions. One thing I don't like about the app is that it doesn't send you push notifications, so you have to remember to open it every day. It works out okay because the app saves the last seven questions, so if you forget a day, the question is still there. Although the interface of the app isn't the best, it gives authentic SAT questions, and I have no problem with that. 9/10[/ul]

SAT Up- Score Beyond (Free)[ul]
SAT Up is an interesting app that does a decent job duplicating the tests of the College Board, and is also helpful in tracking your progress and predicting your score. The app offers mini-tests containing 10-20 questions in either critical reading, math, or writing. At first, the format of the app is a little bit difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it is quite simple to use. This app does include every question seen on the SAT (except the essay), and for the most part, it does a good job. One thing I don't like about the app is that questions repeat, a lot. This makes me worried that I'm only getting questions right because I've seen them before and not getting them right on my own. Overall, the app is nice because it gives close to duplicates of the real questions (although I find the sentence completions to be too hard), but it's annoying because it repeats questions that you've already answered. I appreciate the guided solutions for most of the questions, but it'd be nice if the developer would add better solutions for the critical reading section, as those answers don't really explain how to find the answer. 7/10[/ul]

SAT Vocabulary Visuals and Audios by VocabAhead (1000+ words)- Lafazi, Inc. ($14.99)[ul]
This app, at first glance, seems like it costs a lot. Heck, you can get the blue book for the same price. However, I still think it is a great app. You get access to a little over a thousand words with entertaining pictures and nice audio. In play mode, I like to have the audio continuously play so I can listen to it like music. For this to work, I have to turn off auto-lock so my iPhone won't stop playing the audio after 60 seconds, which is a little bit annoying, but it's not a big deal. The visuals are great for creating connotations with the words so that you'll never forget them. I always remember the illustration of "ambivalent" shows a family at a crossroads that doesn't know which way to go, and I've remembered it ever since. Other than the price, my one critique for the app is that it isn't as customizable as I'd like. For a $15 app, the developers should add playlist features, audio-only mode, and a greater variety of quizzes. If you're going to try this app, I highly suggest you test out the free version here[/url] to make sure you like it before paying the full price. 6/10[/ul]

- Emrecan Dogan (Free)[ul]
Ace the SAT is an app specifically intended to improve your math score on the SAT. I haven't used this app extensively because I already have a pretty high math score (~750), but I have checked it out nonetheless. It offers a choice either 16 or 20-question practice tests, and the program will approximate the score you got after you're finished. The solutions seemed to be very in-depth and accurate, so this app seems like a good option for someone who struggles on the math section. A couple of the solutions weren't yet available, but they could be requested if necessary. The only other negative I can think of is that the color scheme during the test seems a little cheesy and unprofessional, but it's not the end of the world. 8/10[/ul]

SAT Vocab- Brainscape ($4.99)[ul]
The idea behind the app is to modernize the flash card into a system of "confidence-based repetition" that is supposed to "[cut] down your memorization time dramatically." From what I've seen, the words in this app are much more upper-level and only needed by those shooting for 750+ on the CR section. The method of memorizing the words itself is rather interesting, as it attempts to repeat the words that you don't know often until you've actually learned them. In my experience, this is rather difficult, because I'll temporarily learn a word and the app will think that I've mastered it, but then I won't see again for a long time and I'll forget it. Compared to the free apps out there, this is, in my opinion, about on the same level, so there really isn't any reason to get this app unless you are a hardcore SAT prepper. 5/10[/ul]

SAT Proctor- Malyshev EduSys LLC (Free)[ul]
To time yourself during your practice, you can use this proctor app that will give you the same time on each section as you will receive on the actual test. It has customization for both the sections being taken and the breaks, so you can customize which part of the test you want to take (if you don't want to take the whole thing at once). The only problem I have with this app is that you can't change the default settings, so you have to adjust the settings every time. There's not too much to complain about, though, as this is a free app (although those ads do make me want to upgrade sometimes). 8/10[/ul]
