Hey everyone,
I recently posted a thread regarding some scheduling problems that I had. After considering all of the wonderful advice and help that you CC-ers have given me, I created a revised schedule taking into account that advice. Please give me feedback on it! :)

Freshman
Honors English 1
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Biology
Honors Latin 1
(Undecided, please give ideas? Probably either Art 1 or STEM. Apparently, Freshman aren't allowed to take USH 1.)
Orchestra
Chorus

Sophomore
Honors English 2
Honors Pre-Calculus
Honors Chemistry
Honors Latin 2
Honors US History 1
Orchestra
Chorus or AP Economics

Junior
AP English Literature/Composition
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
Honors Latin 3
Honors US History 1
Orchestra
Chorus or AP Biology

Senior
AP English Literature/Composition
AP Calculus BC/2
AP Physics A
AP Latin: Virgil
Honors World Cultures
Orchestra
Chorus or Genetics (Equivalent to what would be "AP Biology 2")

I'm worried that since I'm not taking any AP History/Humanities courses, my application will be weakened. Your opinion? Thanks so much in advance for all replies!

Oh yeah, I’ll also probably be taking art classes either privately or at the local CC.

Are you taking Honors USH 1 twice?

I think you meant World History…

@livelaugh7 Whoop sorry, no, in Jr. Yr. I’m taking USH 2. World History is basically World Cultures.

Oh okay.

So, why are you removing chorus? Do you just not enjoy it or is it to make your application more rigorous?

I also think that your application isn’t weakened because you don’t have as many humanities courses. Your school doesn’t offer certain APs (or I’m sure you would have substituted them) and you are taking your English/History/Language classes. It sorta looks like my schedule, but you don’t know what that looks like lol.

edit: Is there anyway to just not take AP Calc AB and just go to BC?

@livelaugh7 So my cousin’s in the HS I’m going to next year, and he told me that people usually drop out of one or the other music program when in my situation. Therefore, I’m just mapping out scenarios and planning for what may be in the future, should I not like either Orchestra or Chorus.

Speaking of the humanities courses, thank you! However, there is AP World History, I think, but I’ve been told that the World Cultures teacher is PHENOMENAL, so I wanted to take the WC class, haha.

Now, onto Calc, in my school it’s structured so that you go from AB to BC/2. I wish that I could skip though
Thanks so much for responding! :)

No worries. You have AP English Literature and Composition, which is a humanities class. Actually, you have it twice; is one supposed to be AP English Language and Composition? You stated on your earlier thread that APUSH is not offered. Colleges do not expect you to take classes that your school does not offer. Don’t sweat it.

AP Physics A is not a course. I assume you mean AP Physics 1 and/or 2.

Otherwise conceptually it is fine. While it is a good idea to have a roadmap to your high school plan, don’t think of it as being set in stone. Interests change, teachers retire, new offerings are added, old ones are dropped, and sometime 2 classes you want to take are only offered in the same time slot.

^ I agree. “don’t think of it as being set in stone.”

My schedule has changed approximately 6 times since freshman year, and I’m only a sophomore.

And its good that you are taking the class because you like it, not because its more difficult. (I’m talking about World Cultures).

As for your undecided slot, a) are you a hundred percent sure you can’t get around the “Freshman can’t take USH1” thing… my school let you get around such requirements if you show initiative (and have a good GC) and b) since you like STEM classes so much, I think that STEM would be a good course, even if it is just to get your toes wet in the subject area. You an always participate in Art Clubs or run an art related EC.

@skieurope Okay. Well, the AP English Comp./Lit. is taken twice because there is no Honors English 3. I guess there’s a Junior and Senior class? (they don’t really specify) Also, yes, I meant AP Physics 1, sorry. I understand that this is not set in stone, I just want to have a steady idea of where I want to go, and how I plan to do that, because usually when I plan, things turn out better. Of course, everything is subject to change.
@livelaugh7 As I said to skieurope, I understand that this is not set in stone. I just want a plan as to where I want to go and how I plan to do that. So for the undecided slot, I am going to be probably taking STEM. However, if I can convince the school to allow me to take USH 1, I’ll go for it. For my Orchestra and Chorus situation, I’m going to talk to them about maybe allowing me to participate in rehearsals and such, instead of actually taking the classes. (I doubt it’ll happen though.) Therefore, I may be able to take STEM and USH 1 simultaneously.

Thank you both for your responses!!!

There are two levels: English Language and Composition (writing essays, reading non fiction), typically taken Junior Year, and English Literature and Composition (writing literary essays/analysis, reading classics, especially British and English speaking countries), taken Senior year. This may be what your school calls Level 1 and 2. If not, your parents aren’t getting their money’s worth for a private school, as an AP class is already a semester college classe spread out over one high school year, spreading it out over 2 years is really pushing the AP indication.
A good schedule would be: 1 of each every year - English, Math, Foreign Language, Science, Social Science. (You can subsitute an extra science for an extra social science or an extra foreign language, but the most selective schools will expect one of each every year.) + during the 4 years 1 subject “doubled up” - either an extra year of science, social science, or foreign language, or after Calc AB you take Calc at the community college and complete two levels (BC in one semester, calc 3 the next semester) + 1 year of art/music + electives the other years (which can be art/music, or STEM or anything else). Senior year, keep one period for a “fun” class with very little homework (home economics, choir, woodshop, yearbook…) since preparing apps is like having an extra class.

@MYOS1634 Oh my gosh- I just realized that I’ve been reading it wrong this whole time! XD It is, in fact, English Language, THEN Literature! Thank you for clearing that up! (Also, I’m going to a public school, so no worries about money at a private school.)

So about the doubling up in the subjects, would it be better to be consistent with the subject that I double up in throughout the years, or is it ok to have the doubles in a little bit of variety? For example, how I might do AP Economics in Sophomore Year, but thoughout the rest of the years I’m going to double up in science. (AP Economics fulfills the requirement for Financial Literacy.)

Thanks for the advice!

If you choose to double up in a subject, you can vary the doubled-up subject each year. You can alternatively remain consistent in the doubled-up subject, as long as it is not to the detriment of other core classes.

@skieurope, ok. Thanks :)
