Looking on the bright side...any advice on how many schools' revisit days to try? Obviously it depends on whether there's a first choice, but assuming not, I'm thinking 2-3 maximum. That's when the open mind needs to own the decision! Thoughts?

I think the schools are pretty good about scheduling them so that kids can go to as many as possible, or so I’ve heard :). If that doesn’t work than you should go to the one that you prefer.

you will be missing school… so i would go to ur top 2
which is lucky to be getting into 2

The problem we will be having is coordinating revisit days with when deposits are due at NYC day schools.

NYC day schools send out decisions on February 17th (though I’m not sure if they are mailed the day before and can arrive that day - since nearly everybody is in NYC or nearby) and deposits are due by March 16th. Since the only boarding school that my son applied to has its first revisit day at the end of March, we really have to be essentially committed to the school by then or be willing to risk a significant non-refundable deposit.

Complicating matters a bit more is that the NYC selective public schools to which he applied (Stuyvesant, Bronx Science) reply during the first week or so of February (the past two years acceptances have been sent on the 5th and 9th) and responses are due sometime around the end of February. Of course since there’s no deposit with those schools, we can just accept and then notify them any time later (like September, even) that he’s not attending. There’s not even a moral issue. Believe it or not, these schools don’t use a wait list! They send out their acceptances based on their expected yield rate and then simply deal with however many kids accept and then enroll. I suppose over any 4 year period they average out enough so that the total number of students in the school is reasonable, but there are no guarantees.

So, I suppose if he prefers whatever public school he gets into to whatever NYC private schools he gets into, we can decline all the NYC private schools and then compare the NYC public school vs. the boarding school (if he’s accepted there). At least, the NYC private school deposit date is after the boarding school acceptance date (whew!).

As a different aside, when did boarding schools start doing revisit days? Back in ancient times when I applied, I remember having a tour and an interview and that was it.

Revist days are usally scheduled throughout a whole week for each school. You can go any time during that week to the school and It will be a revist day. I am guessing if your are applying for 5 schools you will have the whole week to go to each of thier individual revist days.

I wouldn’t worry about missing school because its rather important to find the best school for your fit for next year, even if you miss a week of current school. This happened to me for interviews, and I asked my current teachers if there was any work that they could give me in advance. I would suggest the same thing if you acquire the privilege of being invited to revisit days. Good Luck! :)

I definitely agree with candidate123, revisit days will play a huge part in deciding your school, especially if you were lucky enough to be accepted into several. I remember when my sister revisited her schools… we took a road trip from the Midwest to A/E and Groton… very fun and totally worth it! Although now I live in Mass and really close to all the schools I applied to, so at least I won’t be missing too much school if it get in.

Even just visisting the schools for my interviews changed my outlook. Viewbooks all have the same motive to make the school look nice and coated with frosting, you need a firsthand account.

I’m not allowed to go. Apparently its a waste of money

they have visiting days after you have been accepted, correct?

blue- revisiting or visiting in general?

Revisiting. I already visted for interviews :)

aww well how’d your interviews go?

WEll i think. Its kind of hard to tell…

umm, I don’t believe revisit days are scheduled throughout an entire week for most schools. (Otherwise, it would be called revisit week). Of course, things could have changed dramatically since we did revisits last year, but I doubt it. I’d advise checking the Admissions Calendar on each school’s website for firm dates. Many are held during the last week in March/first week in April. There are usually a few date options available to accommodate inevitable conflicts.

how long is a revisit? do you get to stay for classes and activities? my impression was it’s a whole day, am I right?

yes i believe you are correct

Activities too? Like joining in on a lacrosse practice?

I heard that the school u got accepted to pay for ur transport for the revisit day!!

Revisit day seems so far away!!
