At my HS, Model UN is pretty much dead. There are two presidents and at the beginning of the school year, they hung up fliers all around the school, so I contacted them. They said they were still in the planning process and that they would update me soon. Couple of months pass and I ask again if Model UN is still active. I got told that it wasn’t executed properly (apparently the club forgot to register with the local chapter), they would be creating a club to talk about international affairs to prepare for MUN next year, and I would be texted for updates (you get the cycle). I never heard from them again and never saw any news about the club. I asked the teacher sponsor of MUN and was told that pretty much no one was interested in MUN. These presidents will be seniors in the fall, so MUN might completely die out next year. I’m really disappointed about this because MUN was one of the ECs I most wanted to join as a freshman, and generally MUN is popular in other schools.
Since MUN seems to be stuck at a standstill at this point and as a rising sophomore with probably nothing to do, I wantto be more active at school and try to revive MUN with better recruitment and organization/planning. If you participate or are a school officer in MUN, how did your team become successful and what are some tips to boost interest?
The first thing I would do is to try to get some people also interested in MUN ahead of time.
Perhaps talk to your friends. Ask Social Studies teachers if you can talk to their classes about MUN.
Does your HS have an Activities Fair? or something at Back to School night?
Also talk to the sponsor…ask if they are still interested in being the sponsor and if they would support you if you tried to get things going. Then maybe contact your local chapter and see what needs to be done.
Ask the Sponsor who had signed up for the club last year, and contact those people to see if they are interested.
Haha I was in a kind of similar situation. We had an MUN but it died out a couple years ago, so I decided to start one. For me, the hardest thing was figuring out how to teach or how to conduct meetings since my advisor didn’t know much. It was fun, but I hopefully will know better next year and improve the meetings. The point of MUN is to know your topic material and there’s no way around that. Choose an advisor who will commit to the club and for your first conference, choose a small one that has been running for a couple of years already. We went to a new one and it was still awesome but pretty disorganized.
