I'm going to UMass Amerst this fall and I have a 3.89 GPA. Would admissions revoke me if because I'm getting a 58 average in my Physics I class this quarter?

All the rest of my grades are A’s and B’s. One other C in precalc…HELP!

While this is a bad grade, I don’t think they are going to revoke your admission for a single bad grade! Based off of your 3.89 GPA, I’d say you’re (normally) a pretty solid student, and admissions probably thinks the same thing. And since it’s just one class that you have such a poor grade in, there’s no way for them to distinguish who (if anyone) is at fault: maybe it’s you, maybe it’s the teacher, maybe it’s nobody. It would be a different story if you had a 58 in a bunch of your classes, but if it’s just one then I think you’ll be fine. If you still have time to bring up that grade, definitely try to do so though. It’s far easier to bring up a bad grade than it is to maintain a great grade throughout the quarter. Don’t freak out about this though! :)

What is your average for the whole year? I don’t think quarter grades are reported on the final transcript.

UMass Amherst requires three years of science (including two with a laboratory component).

If you flunk physics will you still meet the requirement?

You don’t say what your major is, but if you are Engineering that requires physics.

My major is microbiology and I’m on the pre-med track. For the BS in Microbio I need 1 year of general physicas, and my high school class right now is probably equal to half a semester of one intro physics class @ UMass.

I think it’s honestly a combination of the fact we had 2 tests and I bombed both of them pretty bad (like 30s, 40s) but my homework and labs brought it way up. The only thing is I just need to get a C for my final transcript. All my grades are solid except for Pre-Calc, which is a C-.

My school also offers a lower-level physics 1 class for kids who aren’t in pre-calc. I’m not sure if I could jump ship and take the lower-level class now, with 38 days of school left. I’m just going to try my hardest and hopefully get a C! :)

Thanks guys! Maybe we’ll all meet one day in some into to physics class :P

Oh and my school wants 3 credits of science, and all 3 years I’ve had labs too. So right now I’ll have 6 credits of science when I graduate, and I exceed the minimum of 24 to get my diploma.

Quarter 1: 75
Quarter 2: 88
Sem 1 avg: 78
Quarter 3: 58
Quarter 4:?

So I think I’ll pass, unless I get another 58…
