Hello guys, I was wondering If any of you had feedback on the UC rec centers. Like which UC or CSU have the best rec centers etc?? If I get accepted to some places, I might decide on where to go based on the Rec center lol :P

That sounds like a dumb idea

^Ignore. Choose your college based on whatever makes you happy.

That being said; placing such a heavy weight for your decision on rec centers is kind of silly lol.

Sheesh you guys didn’t get my sarcasm, but I’m a workout freak and was curious to know :P

I visited Davis and their gym was great!

I was going to say, just off their rec centers is a terrible idea. However I have a few friends at Sacramento State and their rec center is supposed to be one of the best in the state.

UCLA - John Wooden center is well maintained. All the equipment is good shape and it’s just a really nice complex. It’s open nearly 24 hours. I think it only closes between 1am-5am. It can get REALLY crowded around noon and during the afternoon. It has a huge free weight room with racks of dumbbells from 5-95lbs. There are a lot of cardio machines and resistance machines, the most I’ve ever seen in one place. There’s also multiple basketball courts (some of the courts are super competitive and you sometimes see celebrities there college/pro basketball players occasionally). There’s also racquetball courts as well as a rock climbing wall. And there are also usually a ton of exercise classes that you can take part in. If you’re interested in running there’s Drake Stadium (good for doing stairs) which is an NCAA D1 track. It has a nice rubber surface to jog on and do sprints and it’s open most of the time except early afternoon for the track team. There’s Intermural Field, which is a big grass field near JWC that students can go on. Usually go here if you want to do informal activities with friends (pick up football / soccer etc). And lastly, there are several pools indoor and outdoor that are all decent size. Oh and if you’re interested in basketball there’s another option in the student activities center which is good for pick up games. It’s not as embarrassing if you’re not > 6ft and can’t dunk like the guys in the John Wooden center.

UCSD - RIMAC is pretty big itself. It’s a huge multi-story complex up on the northern part of campus. It has a large free weight room and plenty of resistance machines and cardio machines. There are also racquetball courts and multiple full sized basketball courts and volleyball courts. It can get a little crowded but not as bad as UCLA. The weight room isn’t open at all times. Usually very early in the morning around noon and then again after 5. There’s a time schedule because UCSD athletics uses it at certain times. At UCLA the athletic teams have their own facilities (perks of having D1 sports) which means JWC is more for students, faculty, staff. UCSD also has another smaller gymnasium called Main Gym. It’s pretty much a typical gymnasium with basketball courts and indoor swimming facilities. There’s also an upper terrace with cardio machines and resistance machines. It’s usually not too crowd which is good and makes for another option other than RIMAC for working out. There’s also RIMAC field which is absolutely MASSIVE. It’s a giant field that includes a baseball diamond (only for the baseball/softball team) and has markings for soccer and IM sports. It’s great for running / informal games, you can go on it practically whenever because it’s so big that even if there are other things taking place there’s still space. UCSD also has a track directly across from RIMAC field that’s great for running at night (because lights aren’t always on at RIMAC field at night). Not nearly as nice as Drake Stadium, but serviceable lol. It’s just a bit older, reminds me more of my old high school track. There are also outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, racquetball walls, and fields spread throughout campus, mostly in Muir College near Main Gym. Lastly, there’s the Canyon View aquatic center, which is a full sized outdoor pool open throughout the day and into early evening. There’s also a rock climbing wall near it (but I think you have to pay for a membership).

I’m not sure what the other UCs are like, but I’d find it hard to imagine any of them have better facilities than these two. JWC and RIMAC are both fairly new and state of the art so I don’t think you can get much better. Other than those I’ve been around UCSB and their athletic facilities look much smaller / older by comparison. If you want more information I’m sure each of the UC’s have their own rec page and probably have links with pictures of their facilities as well as their hours and equipment.
