RHIT application questions

Hello College Confidential!
RHIT is a school I am super excited about, even though I am technically applying to it as a "safety" (I would love to have an acceptance under my belt early in the admissions process so I don't have to worry about applying to state schools I don't care for).
Anyways, I am almost done with my first-ever college application, which is more exciting than I thought it would be. I just need to edit my personal statement and have my guidance counselor fill out the recommendation sheet once school starts.
However, I have a couple of questions:
1. I didn't see the ACT/SAT mentioned anywhere on the application, yet they are required. Are we just supposed to know to send them in? Bear with me, this is my first-ever application ;)
2. Can I submit my application during the summer even if my guidance counselor isn't going to submit her recommendation until September? Or do I have to submit both at the same time?

Thanks so much, and best of luck to everyone else applying!

I sent an email asking basically the above questions.

Also if you won’t mind, can you post your stats (scores, GPA) so I know my competition :stuck_out_tongue: ?

Thanks so much e5volcano! That was my back-up plan in case no one on here knew the answers, but you did all the work for me ;)

And gladly!
ACT: 34
SATIIs: 750 Bio, 740 USH
GPA: 4.0
Rank: 2/450

There’s more but those are the basics :). It seems I’m on par with the average stats from last year’s applications so I’m hopeful I’ll get in!

Replied:

If your high school records your SAT and/or ACT scores on your high school transcript (as the vast majority of high schools do), you will not need to have the official test reports sent to our office. If, for some reason your high school does not record that information, you may mail us a copy or copies of your score reports. You do not have to pay ACT or College Board to have the reports sent.

You may send in your portion of the application at any time. All the information from your high school, including the recommendation, may come later. We will match that information to your application. The first round of admission decisions will not be mailed until mid October so there is plenty of time after your school resumes to have the supporting materials sent to our office.

Thanks SO much for helping!
Those were exactly the answers I was looking for.

Np, good luck to you with application! Hopefully we will both get in :D

hey kathyE, i plan to apply to RHIT this year, could you tell me what is the topic of the essay prompt?

and what are the average stats of last years applications?

thanks!

nkhlgeorge-
The RHIT application (available on their website) has an OPTIONAL “personal statement”, which is pretty much a blank slate for anything you may want to write about that will help the admissions officers understand you as a candidate. While it’s not required, I chose to do it because I figured it could only help :)

As for the stats:
SAT Critical Reading: 560 - 670
SAT Math: 630 - 720
SAT Writing: 520 - 640
ACT Composite: 26 - 32

Good idea getting your application in early at a rolling admission school - it would be nice have to get an acceptance at such a good school in October.

Good luck!

When we say “optional” for the essay, we really mean it. Your application will not be looked down upon sans an essay. Also, I am curious where you gathered the SAT/ACT stats as we don’t record the Writing score from the SAT at all and also don’t record the ACT Composite. The only numbers we record are the following median scores:

SAT Critical Reading: 620
SAT Mathematics: 690
ACT English: 29
ACT Mathematics: 32

Those are the only scores we consider in the application/admission process.

Jared Goulding
Assistant Director of Admissions
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

I think he got it from RHIT’s Common Data Set (see page 9 of 36):

<a href=“404 | Rose-Hulman”>404 | Rose-Hulman;

Gotcha. Here is why there is a discrepancy. Our Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment calculates average test scores by including all tests taken by every student. The Admissions Office only considers a student’s highest ACT E or SAT CR and a student’s highest ACT M or SAT M.

In other words, we only consider the student’s highest achievement while the office that calculates the numbers that go into the Common Data Set includes scores that, in some cases, are taken as early as the 8th grade (not fair to the students or Rose-Hulman, IMO). That is why you will see scores that are immaterial to our process as well as a different range calculation.

Jared Goulding

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Hi Jared, for the application where Rose Hulman requests a recommendation from counselor or teacher, does the admissions office only want one recommendation (from either counselor or teacher) or would you guys prefer two (from both of them) or is there no set number?

Hi Mr Jared, could you please tell me the average number of internationals receiving scholarship each year?

Thank You

@e5volcano: We only need one letter of recommendation. We assume you are choosing someone to write the letter who knows you AND likes you. If you want to have two sent, that is fine. Beyond that, however, and we’re just getting redundant.

@nkhlgeorge: Just about every international applicant received a merit award from Rose-Hulman. The average award was about $5,000 per year.

Thank you for the quick reply, I would also like to know, does RHIT offer need based aid to international students? Also is the TOEFL required for all international students( irrespective of their CR score)?

No, need based aid is not offered to international students. A CR score of 500 or better will exempt an international student from having to submit TOEFL scores.

thank you.

Also, do you require/recommend the teacher recommendation to be one from a science or math teacher?

No, any teacher is fine.
