As parent of future engineer, I know little about the field. Heck, I have not understood his math since his 9th grade class, and have only understood his English and Social science lessons since.

I like small schools -- so Rose-Hulman seemed to be akin to an LAC for engineers. But, CMU accepted son. And, it has a name that even I know about.

I direct this thread to engineers -- and the question is: does it really matter that he attend one school as opposed to another if he is anticipating graduate school?

How about job placement? How about summer placement? How about counseling?

How big of a deal are finances and do you have any idea what sized offers you get from each school? CMU is notoriously expensive, so that might become a factor.

Also, CMU isn't really that big of a school. It has roughly 5400 undergrads, and in my graduating class of Materials Engineering last year we had 17 students. For all of my classes within my major since sophomore year, I had less than 20 people (a bunch of my electives had fewer than 10). It's true you'll be in large lectures for most of your classes freshman year, but after that there'll be no worries. The only time I had a class in a lecture hall after freshman year was when I took Engineering Statistics my junior year.

As for how much it matters for grad school...I don't think it's a whole ton, though since I don't think RHIT nearly as many ongoing research projects as CMU he might find it more difficult to find a research project which is interesting and worth pursuing in those rare moments of free-time. Since, really, graduate school admission is mostly about the recommendations from faculty members you have and the research you've done as an undergrad.

Father of the Boarder.....I know we've talked before. Rose Hulman is a great school as you know my D is going there. I thought I would give you an update on my D.

She got an engineering internship for the summer as a Freshman. All due to the wonder full career services. I thought the job was great pay and also had a supplement for housing.

So Rose is my vote.
