Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) College Visit

Don't forget to check out Parsons!

A couple of general links.

One notable thing that my wife pointed out. RISD is NOT a great place if you have a mobility handicap. I didn't see elevators in all buildings. In fact, the elevators are few and far between. I found this very surprising how their buildings could comply with accessibilty architectural codes. It did make both my wife and I wonder about the quality of the architectural program. Maybe it was just too darn expensive to install elevators.

One piece of good news is that RISD is about to add 500 more housing spaces, by redeveloping propoerty across the river from the main campus and near some other facilities that they own in Providence. With the expanded enrollment in recent years, the strain on on-campus housing has been severe, and only first year students were guaranteed it.

Here's a link: <a href="http://www.risd.edu/campus_initiatives_housing.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.risd.edu/campus_initiatives_housing.htm</a></p>

Some other schools (for design) that my S checked out were Drexel, RISD, and Ringling School of Art and Design. He did a pre-college program at Ringling and really liked it. In LA, there were USC, Cal Arts (CA Institute of the Arts), Otis, and UCLA.

Taxguy: another to think about adding to your list is MICA--Maryland Institute College of Art: has been around (in Baltimore) since the 1820s (Lincoln gave a major speech there), has the same sort of relationship with Hopkins that RISD has with Brown, superb teachers and incredible facilities, strong grad and undergrad programs, more student art exhibitions than anywhere, I'm told. Compared to RISD, which I revere, less emphasis on design, more on the arts, always ranked among the top 4 among art colleges (Risd almost always ranked#1), very much worth a look for someone interested in painting, sculpture, or pursuing a GFA (general fine arts) major.

Ider, I live in Maryland and completely agree about MICA. I will add it to the list in the art school forum. I can't believe that I forgot it.
