Could someone please comment about the availability of and satisfaction with internships at Rhodes? Son's academic interests include economics, math, and physics, and he'll probably be most interested in business-related internships. Thank you!

My son is currently a sophomore at Rhodes majoring in International Business with a minor in Russsian Studies. Below are some of my insights I would like to share about Rhodes.

One of the many advantages of attending Rhodes is the fact that the college is part of a major metropolitian community. As such, the school has relationships for business related interships with Fortune 500 companies such as International Paper, FEDEX, Autozone, the Big 4 and regional accounting firm amoung others.

Moreover, the Commerce and Business Department’s Executive in Residence provides one-on-one and classroom professional development and internship guidance for all Commerce and Business majors as they plan and prepare for their careers.

Clearly, the availability of internships is a plus for Rhodes.

KYMAN, many thanks for the specific response. Indeed, attending a LAC in a metropolitan area like Memphis (hard to find a great LAC in such a location) seems to be a plus for internship availability. Aside from opportunities at St. Jude, we haven’t read much about business internships, so your info. is welcome. Could you please also comment about your son’s experience completing the general education requirements (called “Foundation” classes) at Rhodes, while working toward completion of a major? All LACs have an array of gen ed requirements (that’s one thing S likes about them), but Rhodes seems to have especially organized these around topics in religion and philosophy (plus foreign language). We’re wondering what students think of these, how they “manage” the Foundation requirements in conjunction with major requirements, and how critical AP credits may be in meeting the gen ed requirements (if at all). Again, thank you.

The Rhodes curriculum is designed to allow for the completion of the Foundation Curriculum, a major and a minor or a series of elective. I talked to my son and he says that by the end of his sophomore year, he will have completed all but 4 of the FC courses and his language commitments. He will have completed 6 of the 12 courses required for his major in International Business.

Many of the FC courses double up with other courses, for example, three intensive writing courses are required but two of the writing courses are doubled up with one of the Search/Life courses and another with either a fine arts, history, or literature course. Also, two of his business requirements, calculas and econ counted towards to of the FC requirements.

Has anyone been accepted or deferred for Rhodes ( ED) for September 2013? If so, please list stats. Thank you.

It might not be what you normally think of when you say “business internship,” but the Memphis Zoo across the street from Rhodes has a lot of behind-the-scenes internship opportunities for Rhodes students. Only bio majors are allowed to work with the animals, but there are also opportunities in retail, marketing, HR, and so on.

I graduated from Rhodes a few years ago and can tell you anything you wish to know about the academic experience and exit opportunities. I graduated in Business and consider all of the professors to be good friends. Dick Fisher is the executive in residence and is one of the best connections to have in Memphis. He does a great job preparing students for the real world.

Shoot me a message with any other questions you might have. I probably know more about Rhodes than anyone you you will find, including your tour guide on campus. If I don’t know the answer, then I can ask a friend.

ItsMyGop, it seems like most everyone answered your question, but as a current rhodes student feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

goose and Gemmenegger, Thank you so much for offering to be resources for us. Strong likelihood my son and I will visit Rhodes in April. We will definitely contact you before then (and maybe after!) with questions.

I do not have enough posts for a PM…looking for detais on the intenships with business/accounting majors. Does the business major require an internship- I hope? Any idea of the percentage of students land a paying internship their junior year? How many sophomores? How about finding an internship outside of Memphis? We are in a very small town in indiana with zero opportunities. Lastly, how good is the placement service for the students upon graduation - assuming at least a 3.2 GPA? You are welcome to send me a PM if you wish. Thank you in advance!
