Hello, I'm looking at Rhodes College as a possible destination for my Study Abroad year. I currently study Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and am looking at some of the liberal arts colleges in the US. The ones which have interested me are Rhodes College, Haverford College and St Olaf College.

Haverford seems to be the most prestigious of the three and is in quite an attractive location next to Philadelphia.

St Olaf College seems to pride itself in its reputation in mathematics and seems to offer quite an attractive course. But I don't think it's as prestigious as Haverford or Rhodes, and it's located quite far up North in Minnesota.

Rhodes College struck me as having the most beautiful campus of the three. And I'm always a sucker to a bit of architectural eye candy. The location also seems quite nice, next to the city of Memphis in a fairly warm and humid environment. It seems to be quite prestigious, but I'm not sure of it's reputation in mathematics as it seems to perhaps specialise in other fields.

I'd appreciate any sort of help or advice. Thank you.

The math department is a decent size for the college (9 professors, two of whom are computer scientists). The major itself is not particularly large, though. The Econ-Math bridge major is actually more popular at the moment than the straight math major. I’ve had several Econ-Math majors work for me, and they are all extremely intelligent.

The math students are pretty active in academic activities outside the classroom - a couple are going to the Budapest semester in the spring, a few just competed in the ACM programming contest, a team competed in the COMAP modeling contest, there’s a Rhodes-Hendrix-Sewannee symposium every year, etc.

You can read about the department at [Rhodes College | Mathematics & Computer Science](http://www.rhodes.edu/academics/2067.asp).

It may also be worth noting that we have a team that specifically supports study abroad, both Rhodes students going abroad and international students coming to Rhodes. You can read about them here: [Rhodes College | Buckman Center for International Education](http://www.rhodes.edu/2208.asp)

Realistically you’re not going to make a bad choice among the Rhodes, Haverford, or St. Olaf. All three are wonderful. Good luck and enjoy your time in the states.

Memphis is home of the blues and barbecue. A great American experience for a student from overseas. St. Olaf is in a picturesque small college town not too far from Minneapolis. It is a unique Minnesota experience that can’t be duplicated anywhere. Here in the upper midwest we call it Minnesota nice. There is a very strong scandinavian influence. The math and science programs are strong. I know that math is what you are studying but the cross cultural experience of these 2 schools would be outstanding. Not leaving Haverford out but other than it’s prestige I’m not familiar with it.
