Rhodes Early Action 2018

Congratulations sljondonua! Are you planning to attend the scholarship symposium?

Yes! I think I’m going to it on February 21st. Are you?

Early Action letters were mailed yesterday afternoon(1/15) and should arrive soon. Students who were selected as candidates in the Scholarship Symposium were contacted about a week ago. Not all Presidential scholars were invited to the Scholarship Symposium. Good luck to everyone who applied!

I am definitely interested, sljlondonusa… it depends on whether my parents are willing to pay for the trip  It’s a long way from LA to Memphis…

warriordaughter well the trip might get you thousands of dollars!! I only have a six hour drive, though, so it’s not bad.

Anyone local people get letters today? I’m hoping for tomorrow but thinking Saturday here in Jersey

Waiting in Chicago…

That’s true, although… I’m going to hear from a couple other colleges that are higher on my list than Rhodes in the next week. It may be that the costs outweigh the benefits for the scholarship trip.

I got my acceptance letter today! I’m so excited!

My daughter got her acceptance (EA) today, Saturday, January 18! Her acceptance letter said scholarship/aid info was forthcoming in a few weeks. Does that mean it’s a no-go for Presidential? She’s 31 ACT and 1450 CRM. 4.0+ GPA, leadership positions and a varsity swimmer, Governor’s school in computational physics, and Girls State, etc. Congrats to the winners so far!!

Congratulations. The nurturing environment and the high level of academics at Rhodes make it a great choice. Of course, there are also other very good options. But, I think the level of engagement between faculty and students at Rhodes means that students come closer to achieving their full potential there than at many other schools. At the end of the day, you want a school that will help you be the best you can be academically and in terms of personal growth, integrity, and service. When you make your final decision look at academics, and also look at the more intangible but truly important qualities the school has to offer. Good luck.

Knoxpatch, your daughter seems like a wonderful applicant. It may be that she is receiving a lower scholarship, or has received the Presidential but is not invited to the Symposium. Best of luck!

I’ll report back when we know more. Thanks!

Got my letter today! Accepted! For reference, 3.0 UW, 30 ACT, 8 APs/IBs, very unique ECs, a top private school in PA.

Congratulations!!

I got my acceptance letter a few days ago! I’m excited, I can’t wait to see some of you on campus, hopefully :)

Daughter from SoCal accepted. 4.3 weighted (Upper tier public HS), 620 Math, 610 Verbal and 610 Essay and 9 APs. Extras: Waits tables at local Italian restaurant, 200 + hrs Community service, Editor in Chief Yearbook, 4 year letter XC and T&F (Team Captain for both). Will be running at Rhodes. Looks like we’re planning a Spring time family vacation to Memphis…lol Congrats to all the future Lynx!!!

gorilladad: My son and his dad just returned from Rhodes. Beautiful campus. Awesome experience with the T & F/CC team. He spent the night with a couple of freshmen runners, went to dinner with the team, and another runner took him to one of his classes. The coaching staff is wonderful, my husband said. My son will not hear anything regarding admissions for a while, as he applied just before the deadline (770m, 620cr, 640w and 10 APs). While he likes the school, he is a real STEM kid so it may not be a perfect fit.

momreads-- Rhodes is one of the most impressive STEM liberal arts colleges I have come across. In comparison to most LACs, its natural science departments offer some wonderful research opportunities. What is your son interested in majoring in?

momreads: We sent our daughter out to Memphis on her own last October. I wanted her experience to be untainted by her strongly opinionated father…lol She loved the coaches and the head coach called me 3 times to keep me updated. IMHO, he was genuinely caring and very knowledgeable about injury prevention and other issues regarding his athletes. Compared to a number of other college coaches we’ve met and conversed with, he made us feel that our D would be in good hands. Needless to say, Mom and Dad held our collective breath the entire weekend. She came home with a smile on her face that scared the you know what out of us!!! She communicated that Rhodes was now a top 3 choice for her. She is definitely wired for the LAs and Poli Sci/IR is probably the path she will take. The undergrad moot court program is a big plus and she has hinted that she may follow in dad’s footsteps with a JD after undergrad. The biggest issue will be cost. Rhodes is competing against the UCs, Oxy and a pair of Claremont schools (she’s visited and spent the night at some of these schools as well). My daughter and I have had some intense debates regarding ROI from a school that isn’t well known out here in SoCal. I’ve given her my opinion, and of course she doesn’t agree. I’ve set a price and she doesn’t agree. We need to see if she is awarded any merit $$$ and if it’s within the budget and still a top 3 come March, Mom and Dad will make the trip with her. Good luck to your son. Based on his stats (770 M are you kidding???), it is evident that you and your husband have done great!!!
