RHP applicant

Hello!
I am new to this forum and I have questions about USC's Resident Honors Program. I am just wondering how selective "RHP" is. Do they have any requirements to apply?
Also, I am wondering what is the difference between an "RHPer" and a regular freshman. Do people in RHP get special priveleges?
Thank you

See thread below about the RHP. You apply to the RHP when you're a junior, to spend what would have been your senior year in HS at USC as a freshman in the RHP.

basically, with resident honors program, you're admitted during your junior year in high school, so you can skip your senior year and start college earlier.

in addition, rhp students get access to many of the special opporunities at usc: honors dorms, freshman science honors, thematic option (general education honors program), engineering honors program, merit scholarships, undergraduate merit research jobs, etc.

rhp is very, very selective. the admit rate is far below the standard admit rate for regular freshmen; you must have very good grades, test scores, recommendations, etc. to get in.

I'm applying!
I don't know if my stats are strong enough, though.
I guess I might as well ask for an opinion on my chances?

Competitive Surburban Public
4.73 GPA, 4.00 unweighted
Math IIC (800), SAT I (2280)
AP Euro Hist (5 + department award). Will it seriously hurt me if this is the only one I took last year? Currently I'm in Calc BC, APUS, and AP Chem.

Some non-academic stuff...
- Latin Club (former secretary, current historian)
- Girl Scout Silver Award
- school paper, section editor; L.A. Youth, staff writer
- four years of Johns Hopkins CTY, but that was all before high school
And I play the flute! I think it might qualify as a passion--I'm definitely an orchestra dork--but although I've won some nominal honors and performed at the national convention, it's mostly a volunteering medium for me.
- three orchestras
- 400 hours as hospital music volunteer
- president and co-founder of school music club, now in its third year
- Tri-M music honor society

Strong factors may include teacher recs, one of which is from a USC alumna, and good writing ability. Question: Is it better to write a very personal and direct essay or wax intellectual?

If you have any feedback, I'd appreciate it.
I'm hoping to swing it with my essay.
Good luck to all the other RHP applicants!

Go with what you feel is you in the essay. They are taken very seriously, so make sure that the writing is good. Your stats look very good. Also, the dedication of the flute is also excellent. Make sure to talk about that in an essay, as it seems to have had a major impact on your life. Good luck!

Thanks Nikara!
