Rice 2010 Grad taking questions

see title. I'm pretty busy nowadays, but I figure I'll do whatever I can to answer questions in a truthful way.

Or you could just, you know, answer questions like the rest of us 2010 grads on the board.

you should start your own thread too :D

Hey, nyskins… nice photo in the newsletter :)

I want to start a thread.

Id support your thread.

to NYSKins - Glad to see a fellow 2010 grad on this forum! I thought I was the only one still visiting College Confidential. I’m just doing this since this was the common practice for another online school forum. But since there are no questions posted so far, I shall gladly follow your example.

OK, I’ll ask two questions. I’ll read all the answers. Here goes:

My son started Rice this semester. I’ll be visiting next week during Family Weekend. What should I do during the weekend to make the most of it? I should mention that I’ve visited Rice twice; once during Owl Days in April when my son was a prospy and the second time was helping him to move in for O Week. Any suggestions from restaurants to eat at, places to visit in Houston, hotels to stay at, things to do on campus, to ways to be supportive to my son.

Second question: Will Rice cover the spread against Baylor next weekend? I took the points and won with them against UT, so should I quit while I’m ahead?

Salome - there are lots of 2010 grade here. Myself included.

Bird rock- rice probably won’t cover against baylor. The Texas game was “close” as they gave away some really stupid plays. This was probably the worst Texas team since 1994…

If you watched the unt game you might be more scared. That was a disaster and mcguffie needs to be shot

My 2 c

There are several previous threads on what to do in Houston that you might find helpful:

Rice students have all kinds of discounts and stuff from Passport to Houston. Always worth checking out whats around and available too

I thought it was so nice that you asked about ways to be supportive – and I hope that our terrific alums/students will provide insights … Just asking the question shows how tuned in you are.

And I’m sure you’ll do a great job letting your son know clearly that what he’s doing at Rice means so much to you at home. Our son took us on a wonderful campus tour and we met friends along the way. Sitting in on classes with him and seeing his involvement made us all feel good. We let our son know that we were thoroughly convinced that he made the right choice … and that we thought he was doing really well juggling a very busy schedule. Meeting his profs and masters and friends and hanging out in his suite felt good for all of us – we could see that he was happy and thriving – and so is our family.

I think a trip to Ruggles is in order… their dessert menu is really nice. But let your son take the lead on where he likes to eat on Saturday nights …

Bird rock, I think it will all come very naturally for you, but I’d love to hear about what students look for from the weekend.

^^Thanks for noticing and re-wording the question. I guess when I put it in the middle of my post it was easy to overlook.

So the question to recent grads (and others) is:

What did you want from your parents during Family Weekend, especially the first one?

My parents never came for the actual Families Weekend, but that’s because they live within a two-hour drive and weren’t really interested in attending the school-organized events. One of the main things I looked forward to when my parents would visit was going out for some good food as a change from the servery.

Not to forget to ask the classic “what can we bring?” question … I remember lugging stuff on the plane when we flew out to visit – beyond what we’d already sent in care packages … plus warm greetings from relatives, friends’ parents, and other folks who wanted our son to know that even when he’s far away, he’s still in their thoughts.

My parents never came to visit me or even thought about doing so, so kudos to you for being so caring! But if they did, I don’t think it really would have made a difference for me. I didn’t have a car, so it would be nice if they rented a zipcar or drove a car here. It’d be nice if they took me and my roommate and suitemates out for dinner/brunch. It would also be great if they can sit in on classes and seminars and notice my performance in them. Although I imagine all of this is subjective. Someone who’s not doing well in school probably won’t like that. But for me, I think what’s most important is the gratification from seeing my parents being happy for me and being proud of my achievements.
