Well, I guess it's time for everyone to start getting together their applications. The thread's purpose will be namely to discuss tentative chances and to discuss the relative quality of the applications.

I'll go first.

Current School: Texas A&M College Station (Freshman -- Sophomore by hours)
High school rank: 61/321 (at time of application..ended up 35/321)
College GPA: expecting either a 4.0 or a 3.82
SAT: 2150 superscore (they superscore the sat, right?)
ACT: 31 (only took once with zero studying, science caught me off guard. retake?)
SAT II : n/a for transfers, from what i understand

Letters of rec: One will be very good, but I don't know the other professors. I still have time to "get to know" some, but it's nearly impossible when your classes consist of 300+ students and you have no reason to talk to the professor. Some classes like cal II have less, though.

I have a lot of dual credit from high school, but I'm not sure if they will accept it. I also took summer courses before my freshman year at a local university (not cc). None of my dual credit courses were done through a cc.

Really impressive! good luck. I was accepted to Rice and Pomona among others last year, and now I am regretting selecting Stanford. So I hope I get lucky this year with Rice or Pomona and then have the chance to transfer! I’m just worried about financial aid. I wish they offered transfers merit-based scholarships :/

@FSP: Why do you regret choosing Stanford, if you don’t mind me asking? Just curious.

Your stats look good and will put you in range to be accepted. This is, of course, dependent on the retention rate and yield of freshmen, as that will determine the number of spots available.

Your ACT should be fine as is. If you want to retake it, you can.

@kitkatkitty2: I think as I am in school now, a lot of things I thought I wouldn’t mind or wouldn’t miss have changed. I didn’t think dorms were that big of a deal (residential housing system at Rice vs. random housing at Stanford) because I would make friends and meet people regardless, but the spirit is so different and I really dislike the housing system. That is just one thing–another is the large class size, the location–it just doesn’t feel quite like home and I really believe that Rice could be.

This is a tad off-topic and random, but FrenchSilkPie, I remember talking to you in the Yale forum last year! I commented on how delicious your name was. haha Sorry you didn’t like Stanford, but I hope to see you at Rice next year, it would be great to meet you in person. :)

I firmly believe that Rice not only could be, but would be a place that feels like home for you. It does that job for virtually every student that attends.

@FSP: Oh, I see. Best of luck to you! Are you a sophomore or junior transfer, btw? I like your name. :)

I’m wondering what kind of weight they will give to my high school performance. I did not do well at all during my freshman/sophomore years, and thus only my junior/senior years (really only junior because of app deadlines) demonstrated an upward trend.

I mean, I ended up with a 3.88 for the first semester–but they make decisions before our second semester final grades are available. Would anyone like to elucidate some of these things?

Doing well in the later years is definitely helpful. If Rice sees an upward trend, it will carry some weight despite not-so-great freshman year grades. Rice requires a midyear report that contains your next set of grades, when available. This is used to confirm that your performance has not taken a leap off a cliff. A few B’s will be fine (GPA going from 3.8 to 3.6 or so), but anything larger or multiple C’s and D’s could lead to your admission being rescinded.

Also applying for fall 2012. Check my history for stats.

@Antarius
I don’t remember seeing anything about the mid term report being required for transfers, do you remember where you found that?

^ I was speaking based on what I know from freshman admissions. I’m not sure about transfers.

Antarius, I’m applying as a transfer. I was just wondering what kind of weight they’ll put on my high school career versus my college record.

Also, can I pm you about my “Why Rice?” essay and my “Perspective essay?” I have ideas, but I’m not sure if they’re cliche or overdone or not.

Your college will be more important than HS. As it is more recent and at the collegiate level, it will give them a better idea about your capabilities.

Sure.

Thanks. I sent the pm a couple of days ago.

Antarius, have you checked your PMs?

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone had some advice for me. I’m going to post my stats as of now, and the question I had is should I apply to rice for next year, or wait another year for my stats to improve?

High School:
GPA-3.68, freshman and sophomore year’s were not so great, 3.0 and 3.4 i’m pretty sure, then it was very uphill from there. Junior year was a 4.0, and senior was around a 3.9.
ACT-31 Did very good on the Math and Science 34 and 33. Not sure if I should retake it or not. Do they even look at retakes?

College:
GPA-3.90 This is only the first semester and 2 classes I took in high school, but I took Organic chemistry 1 with an A, and the only B I have is in an Engineering class which is no longer my major.
EC’s- I volunteer 7 hours a week at the Heart Hospital for about 3 months now.
My schedule this semester is also very intense, 19 hours with all science and math, Org 2, Chem 1 and 2 w/ labs, Cell Bio, and Calc 2. I will also have all the MCAT prereqs done by next december and am planning to take it then.

So what do you guys think are my chances? should I bother applying now, or wait another year for more college grades? Thanks!

@wcarroway, you look like a competitive transfer applicant.

ahem, someone still needs to check their PMs…ahem, Antarius, cough

It definitely doesn’t seem like theres a ton of transfer applicants this year from the activity on CC…last years forum was insane.

Yeah. Well, more luck to us, I guess. [:<

Do you think that it’s really respective of how many will apply this year? I’m still wondering…
