How friendly is Rice to CC transfers? If someone could chance me that would be great!
My stats:
HS GPA 4.0 ACT:34 SAT II: 800 bio m/e, 800 chem, 800 math ii, 800 physics
5s on 9 APs
College (Freshman) GPA 4.0 Took Orgo I, Calc III, Diff Eq, Lin Alg, Stats, Pysch, Comp sci
Summer + Fall
Currently taking Thermal/Waves/Quantum Physics, Orgo II, English I, Macroecon

Is there any negative part to your application?

If you are talking to me, I’m not so sure there is? I don’t have many volunteer hours? I have a decent amount of EC hours/awards and work hours. I was an international student last year so that hurt my financial aid and college chances. I got my green card in March so hopefully that changes things!

Based on your stats, you’re very competitive.

Thanks! I looked at your stats as well (sorry for stalking haha). I didn’t see your major? maybe chem? Looks like you are pretty competitive! I’m kind of unsure about as to how all this will end up with only 35-45 spots (based on what others are saying).

Nah. I’m a EE. I feel that my SAT scores are a weak point; hopefully they can look past those. Although there are 35-45 spots, remember that they accept around 65-75 people to fill those.

I’m a little worried about coming from a CC hurting me. In your case is a 2090 that bad? That equals like a 30-31 on the act I think? The rest of your app seems super strong especially in the holistic sense.

How do you guys think they react to applicants with lower college GPAs (like 3.3) while being an engineering major from UT-Austin? I’ve taken lots of super hard classes at a really competitive school and hard major so I’m feeling kind of discouraged when it comes to applying because my GPA and scores seem so much lower than y’alls…should I even bother? :/

Wow, i’ve gotten so caught up with school lately, that I haven’t done anything with my application. Do you guys think its too late to start now?

@misssirmaaa I’m new to this whole transferring thing as well. Not sure how they look at everything, but I would assume if you have a lot of other things going on like EC/Work/Volunteer that they would consider that.
Straight off the Rice site
“1. What is the minimum GPA required for transfer applicants?
In order to apply for admission, you should have at least a 3.2 GPA in college. Those offered admission as transfer students typically have a GPA of 3.5 or better. GPAs in college are evaluated within the context of the degree of difficulty of coursework pursued and competitiveness of the college you have attended.”
I think that it’s worth a shot and that you should put a lot of work into the essays since they have 2 while most of the other schools have 0 or 1 essays. This may mean they seriously look into that.
@wcarroway I’m starting now as well, but all I have left is the supplement. Try and get all the forms(hs transcript, college transcript, etc) done this week and then you have ~3 weeks to really get your essays done.

I haven’t started yet either with the essays…I feel super discouraged because of GPA. I don’t know if I’ll do it yet or not, and I’m not even sure that if I did get in I would actually go because I love UT. So who knows! But last years thread was exploding and this years is almost dead so that’s promising!

So why exactly do you want to transfer then? Was Rice your first choice last year or two years ago? Btw I am kinda assuming you are from Texas haha, but what do you think about A&M? (excluding the fact that UT hates A&M) I am thinking about applying there for bme.

Well, I came into UT as a chemical engineering major and figured out that wasn’t for me so I dropped to undeclared engineering. Now I’m having a hard time reapplying to be a civil or mechanical engineering major. I should get in this semester if I get good grades but I think I need a back up l plan or I’ll just end up going back to chemical. UT has the stupidest engineering internal transfer process.

I hate A&M. Can’t stand college station nor all those overalls running around! Haha!

And yeah, I was wait listed for Rice originally so decided on UT and I’ve been here 2 years.

I am also applying to Rice as a transfer, but I am a little confused about the supplement. The writing prompts seem almost, if not exactly, the same as the ones that I wrote for my freshman application. Are we expected to submit an entirely different essay? I feel as though my original essays are still the best way for me to respond to the prompts, and I was accepted as a freshman, so they must have been decent essays. I would feel strange reusing them though…

I would just update them where necessary since something has probably changed about you in a year’s time.

Hey everyone I desperately want to attend Rice as a transfer student can y’all chance my stats and give me some advice. I graduated 2010 and attended Texas A&M University for my freshman year and now I’m attending a community college in San Antonio due to personal family/financial difficulties.

HS Stats:
Graduated 1/350 (valedictorian) 3.96 GPA
ACT 25 in high school, but took it this year and received a 32.
I excelled in science college courses at a community college, while in high school.
Senior member Spanish Honor Society
UIL Science team leader

College Stats:
*A&M GPA- First semester 15 hours with three labs 3.13 GPA I was going through some really tough family problems. Second semester only took 12 hours, but received 4.0. Total GPA at A&M 3.51.
Floor Representative for my residence hall- I raised hundreds of dollars for on campus events, and I established fellowships with other organizations to throw campus wide events for the student body.
Distinguished member for the Universities Pre Vet Society
I lacked extracurriculars due to my dads health issues.

*Community college GPA is a 3.8 and I took 19 hours last semester. With Organic, Calculus, and Physics in that semester, I received As in all of them.
Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Historian- I helped create our chapters first yearbook, I established a volunteer partnership with Animal Defense League with my CC, along with Ronald McDonalds charity house.
I work 25 hours a week to help support my very low income family, while maintaining excellent grades.
I am a STEM recruiter for my community college where I go to different public schools around San Antonio and promote Science majors.
I volunteer as a student tutor for inner city schools in subjects such Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

*First Generation Hispanic student here.

I am thinking about taking a year off of school to intern with a doctor for medical school, but I am afraid that it will hurt my application instead. What can I do to make this an opportunity to strengthen my application. Should I retake courses where I didn’t receive A’s in? Also was it a good idea for me to have retaken the ACT as a college sophomore.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated thank you.

App submitted! Now what…

I applied from a CC in Texas. I figured Rice is a long-shot for me. But, it’s pretty much a long shot for everyone, so I decided to apply. Afterall, I can’t get accepted if I don’t apply. Good luck to everyone and try to keep the blood-pressure down!

What are your stats, if you don’t mind me asking?
