Decision: Accepted
guess I’m continuing the trend, haha.

Objective:[ul]

[] ACT: 35 (34 English, 36 Math, 35 Reading, 34 Science, 10 Writing)
[] SAT II (if submitted): 780 Math II, 740 Chemistry
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school reported it as Top 10%, but in reality it’s 2/601.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro (4), APUSH (5), Chemistry (5), Calculus AB (5), English Language (4), Spanish Language (3)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Stats, TA for a chemistry honors class, AP U.S. Government, AP Physics B (taking C: Mechanics in May), Wind Ensemble (top band class at school), AP English Lit.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): QuestBridge finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, commended National Merit, valedictorian (in June)
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Band (drum major and alto sax section leader), co-founded a tutoring company that is for-profit but also does volunteer tutoring, a bunch of clubs.
[] Job/Work Experience: co-founded the tutoring company, interned at UCLA Engineering last summer.
[] Volunteer/Community service: CSF (president for two years), volunteer tutoring, DC Teens (essentially, a local club of teens that hosts science-related events for kids in the community)
[] Essays: I thought they were all right, perhaps could’ve a bit more polished. I didn’t think my entry in the box at the end was that creative either, haha.
[] Teacher Recommendation: They were good, but I think they still might’ve been a bit generic.
[] Counselor Rec: Good.
[] Additional Rec: Band Director, but I honestly can’t remember if I sent it in to Rice or not.
[] Interview: great! requested it early, back in October.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes!
[] Intended Major: I can’t remember if I put chemical engineering or mechanical/materials science, since I was torn between them at the time.
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: public, fairly competitive.
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: <$60k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): URM, I suppose. first-generation college student, interned at UCLA Engineering.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: the overall transcript, ECs.
[] Weaknesses: generic recommendations, okay essays, low-ish SAT II for chemistry.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I showed that everything I’ve done in high school, I’m truly committed to, rather than trying to mishmash as many ECs as I could.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Rice is currently at the top of my list now, I think. Especially since it’ll end up costing less than the UCs for me, haha. I may be a liberal Californian, but I don’t feel like Rice is like stereotypical Texas. I hope I can go to Owl Days!
