[] Teacher Recommendation: I’ve had them all for 6 years of junior high and high school… but nobody from my school ever applies to top-tier schools… so I’m not sure! They know and love me, though! :relaxed:
[] Counselor Rec: She’s known me since I was in elementary school… she’s awesome! However, she has NEVER in 15+ years of counseling even had someone use the Common Application, so…
[] Additional Rec: Good, I assume. Again, had me for 6 years.
[] Interview: Yup, with an older alumnus who got his master’s degree there. I think it went pretty well.
[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Intended major?: Double major English/Physics

[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Weird situation… Massively negative AGI (-400k 2 years ago, -90k this year), but own a ranch worth 2.5 million that’s been in our family for 70 years… net operating loss for over 5 years with huge debt, though.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Living on a ranch in Nebraska? haha
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, living on a ranch (diversity?), very involved, Rice is my DREAM and I let them know that!
[] Weaknesses: Little rigor due to lack of options, having administration/teachers unfamiliar with the process, lack of major awards
[] Why you think you were accepted: Good fit, geographic diversity, oodles of interest… a miracle?!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: University of Chicago, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Creighton University Honors Program,
Waitlisted at WashU
[/ul]General Comments: We submitted financial documents late so no award info yet. I’m so nervous. I wanna go so freaking bad. This is my dream school!

ACCEPTED! =D my stats are on the wash u thread

Accepted! I’ll post the detailed version later (on my iPhone), though I must admit I’m kind of surprised. My supplement essay was rather rushed. So happy. :D

Decision: Rejected

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs and possibly essays
[] Weaknesses: GPA, lack of interview, and possibly essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not sure how much of a role the interview played in the admissions process, but I’m sure my main problem was my low GPA
[/ul]General Comments: I wasn’t expecting much but was still hopeful. I haven’t actually gotten into any school other than my safeties (waitlisted at a couple), so it kind of bummed me out with just a couple of decisions left.

Decision: Accepted!!!

Autolux… Wow… Must be nice to be a URM…

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See weaknesses.
[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to those who were accepted. You really deserved it!

Waitlisted. Let’s see what happens. Otherwise, accepting UMD offer.

freakozoid,
Yours are great credentials. It’s puzzling why you were not accepted.

I also applied to U of Chicago, WUSTL, and Rice. The feeling I get from my own decisions, and from reading this forum and the WUSTL forum, is that “waitlisted” often means “You have the grades and the scores, but we weren’t so happy with your supplement essay.”

I loved the U of Chicago questions, wrote a perhaps controversial/cynical essay (but very good nonetheless), and was accepted even though my scores were no more than qualifiers.

WUSTL, as you know, does not require an essay, and they waitlisted me (along with everyone else).

I expected to get into Rice, (aced interview, 2170 SATs, 3.86 GPA with very tough IB classes, good extracurriculars, good ca essay, excellent interview, strong recs), but I hit a wall on the supplement essay and really didn’t like it. Waitlisted…

Read carefully through the people who were waitlisted on this forum. Many have ridiculously good scores, but I’m noticing they didn’t like their supplement essays too much, even if they wrote a good common app essay.

I just found out that I got 17,500 in Trustee scholarship and got accepted to BioMed Engineering. Good luck to the waitlisted candidates. I may be one of the few who may end up handing my Rice spot to the waitlisted candidates if I happen to hear from some of the dream BS/MD programs or Harvard. So keep your hopes high. IMHO, there would be 50-100 people giving up their spots to the waitlisted folks.

Decision: Rejected

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Demonstrated interest, high school record, essays, recs
[] Weaknesses: SAT, lack of awards/crazy ecs
[] Why you think you were rejected: Rice is competitive and they can’t accept everyone. I had some weaknesses, and I guess this time they outweighed the positives.
[/ul]General Comments: Im really bummed, but thankfully I got into another school a few days ago. Rice was really my dream, and now I will have to get another. Congratulations to everyone who got in, you have been given a real gift!

freakozoid,

honestly, i’m on the same boat as you are and i think the only reason we didn’t get accepted despite strong credentials is that we are international.

i think it’s totally unfair (understandable, but still unfair).

Decision: Accepted

Reflection
Strengths: Scores, grades, geography
Weaknesses: ECs. And who knows about my recs and essays.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My test scores and grades were really good and I came across as a likeable guy in my essays. I think that was enough.
General Comments: Congratulations to everyone else who’s gotten in. Rice is one of my top choices so I’m obviously very pleased with how this worked out. Financial aid isn’t fantastic though, so I guess I’ll have to see some more offers and then decide whether Rice is worth what they’re asking my family to pay.

Accepted. I will post stats later. (on iPhone)
