[] Strengths: Test scores.
[] Weaknesses: I’d imagine my biggest weakness would be my supplement essay maybe? Or maybe my picture (I sent a picture of my chameleon on a calculus book).
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: IDK. Maybe lack of demonstrated interest?
[/ul]General Comments: Was Hoping for Merit Aid but I wasn’t even admitted =. It was pretty surprising after sweeping my decisions before hand (Caltech, UChicago, HMC). We’ll see if I might be too nerdy for Rice and similar schools when I hear from Harvard and Stanford later, I guess. Hope all accepted are happy and I gave up my spot on the WL so maybe someone might get pulled up cuz of that!

do not worry about cost for Rice. if u make less than 80000 dollars rice will meet your needs

General Comments: So ecstatic atm, Rice was one of my top choices  Seems like I’m the only archi applicant posting here. Other archi students, please PM me! Waiting for the Ivies now. Good Luck!

[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My application, I feel, really portrayed me as a dynamic person.

I was accepted. 2220 SAT 790 and 730 SAT2. 4.0 UW GPA, prestigious public high school. However, I’ll be giving my spot to someone on the waitlist. I got into my dream school of MIT already and plan to go there. I’m disappointed that Rice did not accept my best friend, it was her number one choice. But! They lost out on both her amazing talents and mine because I was only going consider going there instead of MIT if she got in as well! Such is life. If someone gets off the waitlist because of me I’ll be happy! Best of luck!

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My GPA, essays, recs, and well-roundedness?
[] Weaknesses: Lack of APs (my school only offers those above listed though), no work experience, my scores
[li] Why you think you were accepted: my strengths[/li][/ul]General Comments: I’m extremely excited I got in to Rice, it was by far my number one choice and dream school!! Congratz and best of luck to everyone!!

I think the Rice admissions are a joke. The only reason why my son applied was for the Rice Baylor Med Scholars Program and he has been waitlisted - he has been admitted to MIT, CalTech, NothWestern, several UCs with Regents Scholarship. With 2350 SAT and 800s on four SAT 2 subjects, outstanding extra curriculars - we were hoping for a Merit Scholarship and what he got was a waitlist because they found better candidates!!! Yield.Yield.Yield!!!

Not to mention a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 11 APs - 8 till junior year with all 5s!!!

Sid–with all the great acceptances and choices your son has, why all the bitterness? I’m sure there are students who applied to every one of the schools you mentioned who are saying, “I got into school X but not school Y…how is that possible?” Admissions aren’t a science. I say congratulations to your son!

SP … as you may have read here and on other schools sites, you CANNOT go strictly on your test scores and stats regarding “who” is admitted, waitlisted, or rejected. By all accounts your test scores, grades and ECs put you in a position for final determination … that would stand within reason since your information is EXCEPTIONAL. Right? From there other factors take over … your essays, recommendations, and since I’m sure they were also excellent, finally other factors such as Geographical Diversity, etc. Remember they are constructing a class on a variety of variables. It stands to reason that a person from one area might have higher stats and get waitlisted is there was a large number of people applying from that state, town, high school, etc. while at the same time, someone with lower “stats” gets in from an entirely different part of the country for example. One cannot know, and one cannot compare. It is normal to be disappointed, but pointless to dwell on it or make assumptions about why. Rice has maybe 500 spots open for OOS applicants, and “IF,” for example, they wanted numerical diversity from each state, then that would leave only 10 “spots” open per state. You can imagine a scenario where the 11th person from NY might have higher stats than the 10th person from (and I’m picking randomly) Maine, right? I think this is illustrative of why the “poor me” postings add no value. We cannot divine what the REAL variables were related to a decision and we cannot compare … period. It is natural to be disappointed, but certainly NOT useful to affect blame or besmirch the entire institution.

^^^ And incidentally, my D was accepted, but will NOT be attending due to the fact that she received no merit or FA money, so paying full price for Rice is not an option for us. Obviously, with such a highly adept group of incoming Freshman, the competition internally for how Merit was awarded must have been VERY difficult. We are honored to have been invited, but will have to respectfully decline. Not complaining though, she’s got a Full Ride offer from the school she’s chosen to attend. Good luck everyone … Rice is a GREAT school!
