Thought I’d start this thread as I didnt see one. Anyone else waitlisted? Anyone has stats for the waitlist?
On the waitlist form, they say “submit a letter using the upload document link below.” But the upload document link is gone. Anyone else has this problem?
Hi was able to update file
I am waitlisted and DO see the “button” to update my application with a response to the waitlist
yes, the button reappeared today (or maybe yesterday evening) I guess some other waitlisted students contacted them and they added it back.
waitlisted, just checked stats from last year and saw that they only took one person off the waitlist thats crazy
Last year Rice was overenrolled for the class of 2021. The yield was up. More students from the class of 2021 chose Rice than the school was anticipating. The school had to incentivize upper class students to overcrowd housing or move off campus so there were enough dorm rooms for incoming freshmen who are required to live on campus. Rice didn’t have enough room for the admits who responded by May 1 so couldn’t use the wait list. This year, Rice may have admitted fewer students on the front end. I have read about an 11 percent acceptance rate. Rice may go to the wait list more if the class does not fill up. http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2017/08/class-of-2021
Here is an article from the Rice Thresher about the overcrowding last year and yield rates. http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2017/08/high-yield-causes-bed-shortages
Based on the acceptance rate, Rice accepted way fewer students this year than last (a total number of applicants has been announced, and 11% acceptance rate, but Rice has not released the exact number of acceptances for this year). A few years ago, Rice took 150 or so off the wait list. I think that there will be movement in the WL this year (I have no inside info, just speculating). When Rice took kids off the wait list in 2015, they started to move the wait list in late April, which allowed waitlisted kids to commit to Rice before committing to another school.
Thanks, @Faulkner1897 , @Houston1021. Reason enough to stay hopeful.
I wonder how many were offered a place on the waitlist. Does anyone have stats about that?
This may be a dumb question, but when Rice says they want you to update your file “in writing” (bolded), do they mean that they want you to handwrite and scan a letter and aren’t okay with typing?
@sarahyahn typed letter is fine. Just upload it to your portal
Rice admitted 2,266 out of 20,898 for the class of 2022. You can confirm this data from the Spring Town Hall presentation given on 4/4 and posted on Rice’s news page. To reach a target class size of 950 students, Rice’s yield rate would have to be even more aggressive than last year. In fact, we’re looking at a yield in the low 40% range, which is very high and is not likely considering the trends from previous years (36%-38%). So I think it’s almost inevitable that there will be offers made from the wait list this year. Perhaps 100 places.
@Trotskii - At Owl Days, the Director of Admission indicated that the target class size this year is 930. I thought I heard her say 2272 were admitted, but regardless of the actual number, it is way fewer than the number admitted last year. I agree with you that there is a good chance there will be some wait list admits this year.
Just saw the Town Hall presentation. 2266 indeed is the number.
There may have been a few admitted early decision that did not matriculate due to financial aid problems. That may account for the difference between 2272 and 2266. In any event the number is a lot lower than the number admitted last year. Housing at Rice is always tight, and the extra 100 students from 2021 have to be accommodated (unless kicked off campus for a year) and placed into classes until they graduate. It will be interesting to see what the yield is and how many wait list students are admitted
@trotskii The 2266 admitted also includes the ED recruited athletes correct? So they need 41% yield to fill a class of 930. Im not sure how many total freshmen athletes there would be in that number. Just thinking that is a very solid group that will attend for sure. If the previous number of admitted students is much lower this year than last year, how would that impact the yield if they were more selective this year? Is the yield normally consistent over the years regardless of number admitted?
ok found some numbers.
For 2017, 18063 applicants, 2864 admits, 1048 enrolled, 36.6% yield
For 2018, 20900 applicants, 2266 admits, a 36.6% yield (speculating) would be 830 enrolled. So to reach 930 about 100 waitlist spots?
Speculating on the 100 waitlist spots, I would guess they will strive to keep similar percentages as below for the WL spots.
From the town hall 2018 acceptance info:
230 - International Admits - ~10% of admits
2036 - domestic admits - ~90% of admits
11% - African American
31% - Asian
30% - Caucasian
21% - Hispanic
7% - Other
I believe that ED admitted 50 more than usual (including 51 Questbridge) so this might factor into the yield.
