When do waitlist results typically come out for Rice?
@traash They start after the May 1 deposit deadline passes.
“Our goal is to send an update to all waitlisted students by June 1. We anticipate all waitlist decisions will be completed by July 1.”
Interesting, if we pull the ED admits from admitted totals, can this be correct? 640 less RD admits?
2017
2864 admitted - 329ED = 2535 RD admits
2018
2266 admitted - 371ED = 1895 RD admits
Does anyone have any idea how many students were offered positions on the waitlist? This year or in previous years?
Here are relevant statistics using the Common Data Sets from the Rice Web site:

The values for Enrolled, Admit, Admit.ED, and Admit.WL are taken directly from section C of the Common Data Sets, except for last year’s statistics, for which a CDS has not yet been posted (and I’m assuming that no one got off the waitlist last year). The values for Enroll.RD are computed as (Enrolled - Admit.ED - Admit.WL), assuming that all of the ED and waitlist admits attend. This isn’t entirely true, but the Common Data Sets don’t always give enrollment statistics from the ED and waitlist rounds. The values for Admit.RD are computed as (Admit - Admit.ED - Admit.WL).
The useful statistic is therefore Yield.RD, which is (Enroll.RD / Admit.RD), or the number of RD admitted students that decide to enroll. This number has fluctuated over the years. When RD yield has been low, more people have been taken from the waitlist, and conversely, when RD yield has been high, few people have been taken from the waitlist.
Last year showed a large increase in the RD yield from the 3 preceding years (although back to levels from 2011 to 2013), which accounts for the unexpectedly large class size. According to an article in the Rice Thresher from August 23, 2017, the ideal class size is 955, and 1048 actually enrolled.
If we assume the RD yield this year is the same as last year’s, then expected enrollment before the waitlist will be
371 ED + 1895 RD * 0.284 RD yield = 909 expected enrollment from ED and RD
FYI, in 2015 Rice started making offers from the waitlist before May 1. I know a kid who got off the WL that year and it was in late April.
From past threads in College Confidential, it appears that in 2010, when Rice took 131 people off the waitlist, students were also starting to get off the waitlist in late April.
Does anyone know how many ppl were WL?
Of course students have until May 1 to finally decide and send in their deposits. I assume there could be a last minute surge in kids choosing Rice. However, Rice probably has an idea from the number that have already sent in deposits where it stands relative to last year. I hope there are some wait list offers from Rice this year and that they come sooner rather than later for those waiting.
Is Rice need aware for the waitlist? Because if they are then I doubt I’d get off, I need finaid.
@throwawaycmujh they only look at need based for waitlisted students. Waitlist applicants will not be eligible for merit based aid.
I have heard that in previous years, waitlist decisions have come out as early as April 23rd (today), has anyone heard anything?
A class of 930 would be a very tight number, indeed. If we know that Rice took 371 from 1,916 during the ED round, that would leave about 560 to enroll from about 18,980 in RD. Assuming the 2,266 total admits is correct from the town hall, 1,895 of those would have been in the RD round. So now we have all the numbers filled in. To fill a class of 930, Rice will need 560 to enroll of the 1,895 accepted RD. That’s about 30% yield from RD. That would suggest a relatively thin use of the wait list this year. Yes, a target of 930 will make for a very selective class.
how do they contact you if you get off the waitlist?
@susie0102 they will call you. I received a call today from admissions and was told that I and other waitlisted students have been removed from waitlist and offered a spot if we still want it but must confirm by May 1st. Honestly in shock.
But this is still the first wave/“pick” of students I guess. I believe more students will get in further on.
Congratulations! @Agntep did you go to Rice Vision 2022? Did you commit to Rice after getting the call or are you still deciding?
@Houston1021 thank you!! And yes I did go.
I’m not sure I’m commiting though, as one of the neg. about being accepted from waitlisted is that they don’t give merit scholarships and I don’t qualify for any financial Aid and the other school I’m deciding with basically gave me a full tuition scholarship.
Btw where you there at Vision?
I am a parent of a Rice student. It is great that you had a chance to visit the campus for Vision. i have heard that the Vision Program is fantastic and really gives the attendees a great preview of life at Rice. A full tuition scholarship is hard to turn down. Whatever school you choose will be lucky to have you.
@Agntep what major?
