Ok I was taking a look at the world university rankings based on faculty, research and academics and to my surprise I found out that Rice is #78. Believe it or not Purdue is higher in ranking. So how did Rice reach #17 in the US rankings?! There is a big difference between 17 and 78!!! And UChicago which is #15 in US is number 10 in the world. What is happening?

P.S: I am not a ranking or prestige whore, I'm just concerned.

For the study you are talking about graduate programs and such are more important in the rankings. Rice has always been focused on undergrad, that shouldn't be surprising.

Not to mention I think the whole ranking this is riddled with errors and pretty much impossible to do correctly. I chose Rice over higher ranked schools and would do so again in a heartbeat.

If you are all about the rankings, then check the US graduate rankings. Rice will almost always be towards the bottom of the list becasue the school puts its emphasis on undergrads.

I dont know if the rankings is based on thheir graduate programs. Rice is very high on my list and I'll definitly choose it over a couple of Ivies.

And thanx for telling me about Rice's Grad programs

It also depends on what world ranking you are looking at. The one that I had did not even place University of Chicago or Rice on the list. Instead it had UT Austin as like #16. The rankings are totally false though. Everyone on this forum knows that Rice is really #1.

I would not give that ranking too much thought. The University of California-San Francisco was ranked in the top 15 if I recall. UCSF is purely a medical school!

Which ranking, put out by who? If you are looking for "world" recognition - people in other countries will not be very familiar with Rice, but will be with HYPS and large public U's so will rank them higher. There's also the issue of volume... Rice is a small school so doesn't generate the huge amount of research that bigger schools do. To which rankings are you refering?

anxious mom,
No I wasnt talking about world recognition. This site has ranked the most prominent universities in the world and has placed rice in number 78

that ranking is crap... Emory is ranked outside the top 100... and its ranked #20 by USN... the very fact that ASU is ranked above Emory should be enough alone to discredit the ranking

this should make you feel a little better. Though a little dated this ranking uses what many consider some of the best methodology, and it is from the University of Texas:
