Rice’s acceptances are out at 8.7%, if you separate ED, probably RD is even lower. What do you expect from Ivies this year? Harvard, Yale and Princeton are bound to be lower but what do you predict for rest of the Ivies?
Regarding Brown University…What we know:
Last year (Class of 2022 total acceptance rate was 7.2%)
This year’s ED round 4,230 applications (20.8% YOY increase) and 769 acceptances (4.3% YOY increase).
Total applications received 38,640 (9% YOY increase).
RD round 34,410 applications (7.7% YOY increase).
Last year Brown accepted a total of 2,566 applicants. Of that total 1,829 were RD applicants.
What we can approximate:
Brown will likely accept fewer total students this year having offered 32 “committed” ED spots. Additionally, the “Brown Promise” is anticipated to increase yield. With that in mind it is conservative to anticipate total acceptances reduced by 66 spots to 2,500 and consequently RD spots to 1,731.
That will likely result in a total acceptance rate of 6.5% or slightly lower and an RD rate of approx 4.7% once the 2,326 ED deferred students are accounted for in the RD pool.
These are just estimates but likely close to where things should land. Good luck to everyone given how challenging the odds are.
Just for reference last year’s top 20 based on lowest acceptance rate in descending order:
1 Stanford 4.3%
2 Harvard 4.6%
3 Princeton 5.5%
4 Columbia 5.5%
5 Yale 6.3%
6 Caltech 6.5%
7 MIT 6.7%
8 Pomona 6.9%
9 Brown 7.2%
10 U Chicago 7.2%
11 Duke 8.3%
12 U Penn 8.4%
13 Northwestern 8.4%
14 Dartmouth 8.7%
15 Swarthmore 9.1%
16 Johns Hopkins 9.9%
17 Cornell 10.3%
18 Bowdoin10.3%
19 Rice 10.8%
20 Williams 12.2%
Direct from Brown…
“Brown received 38,674 applications for the Class of 2023, which constitutes a 9 percent increase over last year. This is the largest application pool in the University’s history. Brown will make 1,784 Regular Decision offers of admission to the incoming Class of 2023, in addition to the 769 Early Decision admission offers made in December. The overall admit rate for this year’s pool is 6.6 percent. The Regular Decision admit rate is 4.8 percent.”
overall 6.6% for Brown… Thats mind boggling.
If all the kids this year applies to twice as many schools as all the kids last year then the acceptance rate of all the schools will be reduced in half. Does that mean this year is twice more competitive than last? Of course not. What about schools that manipulate the number by yield protection?
These numbers mean very little as an indicator of competitiveness of the classes or of the schools.
There are too many uncontrolled variables. We really should not put too much importance on these numbers.
Harvard RD going below 1% this year?
I find it extremely annoying that these schools intentionally keep their admit rates low. All of them have more than enough funding to expand their housing and departments. Education isn’t something that should be branded!
In Rice’s case, small classes, residential colleges, easy access to professors and a more intimate community are pillars of their philosophy. Their small size is their biggest draw, at least for paying families. It’s basically a LAC size research university, that’s not easy to find.
If they tried overcrowding or over expanding then they’ll loose what makes them unique.
@Riversider I’m talking mostly about the Ivies. Even if they expand to twice their size, they will still have the same number of applicants. Reputation is everything with these schools.
Whoa!
The college acceptance problem is a problem that perpetuates itself. Maybe they need to go to a match, like doctors do when they are applying for their residency. You put down your top three choices, and residency programs do something similar. Hopefully you get your first choice!
Sure that will work, I’ll take HYP as my three choices…
Did you see RD acceptance rate for Duke and Vanderbilt anywhere?
Vandy RD 6.3% https://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/vandybloggers/2019/03/class-of-2023-regular-decision-summary-statistics/
What’s the reason for Cornell’s rate going up instead of going down like all these schools?
@ Riversider See below… applications down.
It boggles my mind that so many people continue to put so much effort into applying to these schools.
@Trixy34 why would it surprise you given how much hard work and determination students undertake throughout HS to be suitable applicants to these schools? Many people believe in working hard in pursuit of goals. I’m honestly not sure I understand the comment. Isn’t determined effort a virtue?
@Nocreativity1 - My brother-in-law has always said that the lottery is a tax on the mathematically challenged. 'Nough said.
@Nocreativity1 Why are applications down?
