I live in New York and I'm applying to Rice. How many kids from the east coast generally apply?

Take a look
[Rice University | Demographics, U.S.](http://www.professor.rice.edu/professor/Demographics_US.asp?SnID=956308613)

To be a little more specific, a lot of people from the Northeast are at Rice. NJ for example send a lot of kids to Rice.

I consider Boston home, and I came to Rice from there. Why do you ask, by the way?

Rice has increased its student body by more than 25% since 1997. Now they are building a medical school. How has this affected the undergraduate experience?

Im sorry, what?

We’re from NY and my son is a freshman. I’d like to say that Rice is a bit closer than you might think. Since it’s close to Hobby airport it actually takes us less time to get to Rice than it would take us to get to Dartmouth or Middlebury.

Well, maybe they haven’t broken ground yet, but we saw a presentation by an Admissions Officer about a year ago, and she said it was in the works.

Do you mean the Bioscience Research Center?

1bie,

The admissions officer could have been referring to a once possible merger with Baylor… [Baylor U. could be suitor for medical school | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle](http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6811312.html)

I’m considering writing my Rice supplement about what being a New Yorker has meant to me, and I was wondering whether or not that would be unique or if they would receive thousands of essays like that.

As long as the essay is about YOU, that should be good. The problem is, people write essays about diversity etc. but make the whole essay about the issue. Rice cares more about you, how this diversity impacted you and what you learned from/did about it.

As long as you do this, and keep the essay unique, you will be fine.

You might also want to think about what your New York spirit will add to the campus
(on whatever level that feels right) … and how life at Rice could change some of your perspectives.

Give it your best! And please give my best to Gotham City!

Hopefully not another Yankees fan… ;)

im applying to rice from new york as well. Hopefully if i get accepted, i can find a fellow new york jets fan haha.

Anyway i have a question on how the weather is in texas…is it normally warm all year round or no?

It is very hot in the summer, typically cooling down mid/late october, and it is generally pretty cold november-february. Then the weather is mild march-early may, when the cycle begins anew.

I don’t like your type either… :P

Anyways, the weather is as demonsword says, hot in the summer and cool in the winter. It is high 70’s right now with lows in the upper 60’s. The last couple of years it has snowed once in december/january, although the temperature will be in the 30’s then.

Compared to NY (especially upstate) it is nothing in the winter. Summers are bad, but everything is airconditioned. July August is probably the worst two months in Houston.

Also, it rains randomly for 5 minute periods. One moment it is sunny, then a bunch of clouds move in followed by thunder/lightning. Then it pours like the end of the world for 5 minutes and is sunny soon thereafter.

now what do you mean by pretty cold. Because here in december-february it’s like 20s-30s…which i think is pretty cold. But i didnt think it would get that cold in houston

As I posted above - temperature gets into the 30’s occasionally. 40’s is common for dec jan feb.

thanks that sounds better than NY weather lol

The winters are nice. I have a convertible, and I haven’t put the top up for a while as the weather is nice. Clear skies with 70’s to 80’s weather.

The summers suck. But it is only for a few months. If you intern somewhere/go home you can escape Houston for a while. Then you have End of August and some of Sept. to deal with, but that isn’t too bad
