for those are applying or those who are currently in the program:
do you know if we can/ need to submit anything else (e.g. additional recommendation letters) besides the application?

Last year's info - may not still be true:

The only thing that you needed to submit was the 2 supplemental essays from the rice/baylor app. They foward your entire Rice app to the selection committee as well, so don't send in anything that would duplicate things that were in your rice app. I feel like you probably shouldn't send anything supplemental with the rice baylor app, unless it is very substantial. I actually did send them a note in January informing them that I had been named an Intel semifinalist, since that wasn't in my Rice app, but i thought it was important. I guess this is a time to use your judgement.

how does this whole rice/baylor process work? do you automatically get an interview to be evaluated with your application? or is your application for the program evaluated first and then it determines whether you even get an interview or not?

The second one.

Ok, so you applied to Rice and were accepted, that's step one.
Step 2: fill out and send in the supplemental app.
Step 3: Your rice app and the supplemental essays are forwarded to the Rice/Baylor selection committee. About 200 people get to this step.
Step 4: The Rice/Baylor people inform 40 of the 200 applicants that they will get an interview. The other 160 have essentially been rejected from R/B at this point.
Step 5: if you are one of the 40, you go to an interview at Baylor in April. This is where they make the final decisions.
Step 6: About 20 people out of the 40 interviewees are accepted - that's it!

whoops, sorry! I think it's actually 28% ED, 28% ID, and 17% RD!

for ppl writing the essays, are you guys handwriting them onto the sheet or typing them on to the sheet?

I typed mine and printed them directly on the sheet.

what are the kinds of students who were admitted to Rice/Baylor? does not having any formal research experience in hs kill your chances for admission?

hey, im trying for the rice/baylor program...umm, we only had to apply ID right? not sooner? and also, does anyone know when ID applicants hear back?

If you read the application packet, it says we'll be notified around Feb 10... but I heard some people received their letter decisions like Feb 6-ish. ;)

yup you had to apply ed or id to compete for r/b. i think IDers find out around Feb. 10...good luck!!

does anyone know how important the essays are during the evaluation process?

well, they are the only additional supplement to your regular application...so i guess, pretty important? any ideas on which essay question (front or back) will have more emphasis, collegekid88?

There was more than one essay question? I only remember writing one essay... or maybe I forgot because it was a long time ago.

edit: I should have read the title of the thread beforehand. ;)

does anybody know how many people apply to the rice/baylor program, and what average stats are? just curious

200 people apply for 15-20 spots. Rice claims that average SAT scores for Rice/Baylors equals average scores in the rest of the class (I don't believe them).

haha. i dont either. oh well, i hear in a few days.

Only 200 apply?

yup! no one seems to know that, but it's right on the website. (Caveat: those 200 have all been admitted to Rice already, so that weeds out some people who might have otherwise applied)

Oh well that makes more sense, getting to Rice by itself would eliminate quite a few.

When do we get notification about the supp app?
