Rice/Baylor Med Scholars Program

what kinds of stats do you need? They only let 14 people per year. Does any other college have a partnership with Baylor?

i don't think any other college has a partnership with baylor....

my friend got in last year.
her stats...uh...not sure? she had great speaking skills, for sure. so i guess she pwnd her interview. oh and she could write. rly rly well.

there are other programs w/ baylor. i forgot them though

a couple questions for the baylor app:
does tutoring count as an non-academic activity? i wrote a really good essay for it.
I can't think of any adversity.
I have written a good essay on why I want to do medicine for the Baylor Med Program app, but there is also a question on the Rice supplement that asks why you want to go into the particular school of study. Isn't that redundant? Assuming I can't have the same essay for both, any tips on how to write 2 different essays?

an essay about the school of study doesnt cover medicine

Admissions into Rice/Baylor (only somewhat arguably the best program of its kind) is INSANE, however, they don't necessarily just take the highest SAT scores and GPA and assume that that is that. I can't really explain the process entirely, never having done it myself, but I think one of the things they really look for is commitment to stay with medicine and attend Baylor College after graduation (you have to clearly want to do this for your life if they are going to take a high schooler four years in advance). Good luck to you all! Hopefully one of you will be lucky enough to get it!

If you're a TX resident don't worry. You have several MD schools that are fairly easy to get into, and a DO school at No. TX. And if you can get into the Rice program, it just proves that much more how much you won't need it to go to med school. But if you can it's nice to not have to worry about the med school application process...

About 2000 applicants to Rice indicate an interest in the Rice/Baylor program. The first hurdle is high--gaining admission to Rice. From those who are offered admission to Rice, between 250 and 300 will apply to the medical scholars program. The admissions committee of Baylor College of Medicine will select approximately 40 students to interview and will offer participation to 20, expecting 15 to accept. Although the Rice web site states that R/B Medical Scholars have the same statistical profile as others accepted to Rice, I suspect that most come from the top quartile, which means M and CR scores over 1500, most likely at one sitting. For information about the other programs with Baylor College of Medicine check BCM.edu.

thanks for the info, wobudong
i was also wondering about them saying that r/b scholars have the same test scores/gpa as the regularly admitted student.
Wait a minute tho... why do you say the SAT score has to be in one sitting. I've asked Rice this, and they said they will superscore. Are you saying Baylor won't? cuz without superscoring, i'm at a big disadvantage, even though I will still be on the cuff with a 1510 (as opposed to a 1580). also, how important is the writing score? and, how important is research (that's something I regret I never got the chance to do)

Baylor Med School also has a program with DeBakey High School and the University of Houston.

The Houston Premedical Academy - The Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions

bcm has a program with baylor university, which is in waco i think. its probably not as competitive as the rice one, but im not sure if its for oos people

hpa I googled it and didn't find such a program. I have read that Baylor College of Medicine loosened its ties with Baylor university a while ago.

here is the link to the baylor/bcm program :

Baylor University || Baylor Prehealth Professions || Guaranteed Medical Admissions

yea bcm and baylor arent that close anymore, but this program is still there. keep in mind that if you apply to this program, you cant apply to the rice/baylor program.

bcm and baylor aren't linked at all and haven't been for a long, long, long time. The Baylor/Baylor program is good though.

yea the baylor/baylor prog still exists. but who wants to spend 4 years undergrad in waco.

which program is easier to get into?
Also, I read on the web Baylor U website that they don't superscore. Is this true for the Rice/Baylor Program too, because I know Rice University does superscore? I really hope they superscore, since it would be a difference of 1580 vs. 1510

baylor/baylor is easier to get into. im pretty sure rice/baylor superscores

i know someone who was rice/baylor with like, i am not sure exactly, but low to mid 1300s. the lesson you should take from this is NOT that it is easier to get in than you thought, but that scores aren't the half of it.

so they focus a lot on research/volunteering? Essays?

They focus a lot on everything. The example with the 1300 must have had enough other stuff to compensate. The point is basically, even if you don't meet what you think their objective standards are, you should still apply b/c numbers are only one aspect of the application (important, yes, but only one aspect).
