How important is this? i heard from some people it might be the deciding factor if two people are about the same in stats, and i've heard from others who didn't really care about it. which is more important, rice box or rice essay? thanks and happy new year :D

CC really needs to make a featured discussion or permanent link or something for this question. It gets asked every few weeks or so.

As to the original question, I'm almost sure the essay is more important. The box can be a deciding factor, but so can just about anything. The box is really just something fun to throw in - probably to entertain adcoms more than anything else.

I would like to know if we can explain about the picture we put into the signature box so that the adcoms can get a clearer picture of what exactly the picture signifies?

Why do you want to explain it..?

A picture is worth a thousand words, correct? I'd say it should be self-explanatory. Actually, I don't think the box counts for anything in the admissions process anyway, so the explanation is doubly pointless.

I think the box can tip rather heavily. The essay is conventional and stuff... but if the essay shows your creativity, and your box is awesome and exemplifies a feature you highlighted/ is a unique never-seen-before an is good, it can help

Note: Do NOT put anything closely relating to Rice (the food) as that would make you the 1 millionth person to do so and could hurt your app

nah....its nothing related to food but the picture alone will not signify anything unless i mention what exactly the picture means to me.

For example (I am not putting this in my box) :

I put a picture winding staircase having something of value at the top (for say). The picture on its own will not mean anything but in case i mention that "Success does not come to you.......you go to it by hardwork". It would mean much more than just the picture on its own.

That is why i asked the question.

Well, I don't think it's unheard-of for people to write in captions for their box submissions, so you might try something like that, as long as it's short. Actually, you should probably ask someone more knowledgeable than myself beforehand.

my feeling is a picture that makes sense on its own and reveals something... is much better than a somewhat random picture that needs words

my interviewer submitted a picture of tom cruise and she got in...so yea lol...just put whatever that u like, though not inappropriate stuff. I dont think the box counts for much

it ay not... but treat it like it counts as much as anything else... because if i has value.. u will be safe

Put a picture, a poem, a story that shows YOU or something about YOU or something in YOUR life

I put a booklet in there with a short story about the time I saved a baby Owl and how it stayed with us for a while.

i put a picture that i drew of alice in wonderland (like from the disney movie) saying 'curiouser and curiouser!' and playing cards flying all around her.

i don't really think the pic is that big of a deal. my interviewer said that he submitted his app last minute, so his box consisted of a smiley face that he scrawled with pen and yellow highlighter. haha

Guys, I just put the wrapper of my favorite candy bar. The Rice admissions person I talked to said it was really just a way to remember your application, and probably won't be looked at in a super-deep way. Just put something in there you like, and then go back to editing your essays. 500 words says a lot more than a little box.

but a picture is worth a 1000 wirds.. more than 500 isnt it? ;)

Drat, you're right! Does that mean my 100-Grand Bar wrapper is worth 100,000 words?

hmm... maybe! Looks like you are expressing yourself well :D
