[] Job/Work Experience: Worked at Benchoff & Benchoff Law Firm over the summer after my Sophomore year.
[] Volunteer/Community service: I have volunteered since I was little and added more volunteering my sophomore and junior year. I have volunteered for Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Bowl for Kid’s Sake (which raises money for local kids after school activities), and Alzheimer’s Walk since I was a baby and really started participating as soon as I could walk around and talk to people about donating money. I started doing Habitat for Humanity my sophomore year and fell in love with it and have been helping out every chance I get.
[] Summer Activities: I generally take at least two college courses every summer. I also worked the summer after my sophomore year. Last summer I took Botany with a lab. It was awesome!
[] Essays: For the short essay asking why I want to come to Rice I told about how I have been searching since Freshman year trying to decide where I wanted to go. I had researched numerous schools online and finally realized I couldn’t decide based on websites and numbers, so I visited a few colleges. The last college I visited was Rice and I talked about how I immediately had the feeling that this was the school for me and why I liked it so much. (the squirrels, the trees, the beautiful buildings, the amazing staff, the great reputation, etc.)
Second Essay: I talked about my science teacher that I had Freshmen and Sophomore year and how he influenced me and how I was disappointed when he retired. I felt like it was pretty moving (I even sent him a copy so he could see how I saw him as a teacher)
Supplement Essay: Felt it was unique. I talked about how I used to be shy and how I love to read and said I wanted to become a campus tour guide to show others the school and give them as amazing a tour as the one I got. I also talked about how I hoped to be able to help others who may be shy to come out of their shell.
Other Essay (don’t remember where it was…): I talked about how I never wanted to join One Act Play because my sister did it while in High School and I was scared of being compared to her and not being as good. I overcame that fear last year and tried out and we ended up going to Area, which is farther than my school has gone in over ten years or so.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Decent, I wanted to get the teacher who I wrote my essay about to write one, but my counselor and mom insisted it had to be a current teacher. Also, I noticed a typo in one of them after my teacher had submitted it when she showed it to me
[] Counselor Rec: Amazing! I didn’t get to read it, but she told me about it and said she talked about how great a person I am and how I am always smiling, happy, and nice to everyone.
[] Additional Rec: pretty good
[] Interview: I felt like it was pretty great. I stumbled a few times on easy questions due to nerves, but the interviewer (a senior at Rice) seemed pretty nice about it. He was laid-back and I felt like I got lucky when I got him to interview me.
[/ul]Etc.[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): Texas
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: 1A - Extremely small

[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: a little over 80,000 I believe
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 1st to graduate college, valedictorian, other than that I don’t know…
[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: Lots of college classes taken, essays, interview, ACT, counselor rec, and community service/ec
[] Weaknesses: No AP classes, small school size, etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t even know. I was terrified the whole time I was waiting. Maybe to get some diversity and because I’m a female interested in biomedical engineering?
[li] The most unique thing in your application: Essay about teacher who influenced me and amount of college classes taken and volunteer work done.
[/li]

[li] The most unique thing in your application: my desire to get in?
[/li]

I really don’t know the chances of getting accepted after being deferred especially because Calculus BC has kicked my butt this year, but if any of y’all know the chance of getting in after deferral, please let me know!

Congrats to everyone who was accepted; Welcome to Rice. Good luck to those who were deferred. Hard luck to those who got rejected; I am sure you will find another school that is a great fit for you.

It depends on the RD applicant pool. I do not know the percentage of those deferred that get admitted. Also, if things change with your application, such as improved grades, new awards, EC’s etc. be sure to update your file.

Decision: Accepted

[] Volunteer/Community service: Substantial amount of hours through my school’s NHS.
[] Summer Activities: I had a few week long leadership program, part of which took place at Rice. Nothing else too noteworthy, though.
[] Essays: Very strong. I was able to have my cousin (a Rice alumnus) help me on my essays. I began working on them fairly early, too, so that may have helped. My “What perspective will you bring” essay in particular was great, I think.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Very good.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea, but presumably quite good.
[] Interview: Went fairly well, I’d say. I flubbed maybe a question or two, but it was extremely casual. We talked about going to see ‘The Lion King’ that night, if that’s any indication of how it went.
[/ul]Etc.[ul]

[] Intended Major: Psych/Cog. Sci
[] State (if domestic applicant): Texas

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays, and the large amount of demonstrated interest that I showed.
[] Weaknesses: Not having enough extra-curriculars, or any major work experience.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think, honestly, the way in which I portrayed myself in my essays helped a lot. My perspective essay was really open and definitely one of my better pieces of writing. Throughout the process, I just made sure to be myself, and apparently, it worked! I’m so very thankful to SO many people, and I can’t wait to attend Rice next year!!!
[] The most unique thing in your application: Definitely my Harry Potter drawing for “the box”. :)[/ul]

Also, a brief side note to future CCers, decisions results did indeed end up getting released around 5. The CC forums went offline around 4:50, so that’s why there’s a huge delay until we started posting results. Just FYI.
