General Comments
Congrats to those who were also accepted and to those that were not, we’ve all heard it too many times, but here’s one more: you’ll end up somewhere great anyhow, and really, in 4 years it won’t matter where you went but rather what you did. And no one will care for Rice’s loss, or really for where you go, but only for the person that you will exemplify while there. Good luck with other schools this week and next!!!

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): n/a
[] ACT: 30 composite
[] SAT II: Listed them blank on my Common App due to other schools. Didn’t send.
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.72
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 22/414 on school report, 20/414 on midyear report.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Human Geo (3), Lit (3), Macroecon (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Spanish B SL (4)
[] Senior Year Course Load: Heavy, stressful. 6 IBs and 1 AP.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None.
[/ul]Subjectives:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Journalism (7 years, put a lot of passion in this); then ordinary, basic EC’s: National Honor Society, a version of SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving, etc.), a lot of art stuff, and, again, a lot of journalism stuff, since it’s my passion.
[] Job/Work Experience: One summer job, in which I wrote community grants.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Over 350 hours (which was written into a letter of rec). Mentioned how I was working with the Peace Corps for fundraising moneys for schools in Africa, but that wasn’t a big part of my application.
[] Summer Activities: Journalism conventions, camps, and conferences.
[] Essays: For the short EC essay, I talked about journalism allowed me to learn how to think on my feet. My longer EC was really eye-opening. I cried writing it because I felt so vulnerable. Had a unique topic, too. My essays for Rice were a bit off-of-the-wall, which made them unique, I’d have to say. I mentioned being gay, wanting to write for the school’s newspaper, and contributing a lot to the Residential College System.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One of them was amazing; really used the “right” words schools like Rice look for (“leader, organized, creative, etc.”); also discussed my interest in journalism. My second I didn’t get to see.
[] Counselor Rec: Subdued. I had to fight with her to get it the way I wanted, but it naturally included similar adjectives in my first teacher rec. It also talked about my success in my school’s art program, as well as my interest in journalism.
[] Additional Rec: Perfect. This came from my other counselor (I have two at my school), and this one talked about my passion for French (which I selected as one of my majors) despite already finishing the language requirement at my school (so, I ended up taking 2 languages in high school).
[] Interview: Nope! Missed the deadline.
[/ul]Etc.[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes!
[] Intended Major: I chose Social Sciences as my school, and checked off Political Science and French.
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL.
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: A pathetic excuse for a public school.
[] Ethnicity: African-American
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $45k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, definitely. Also being gay, although I wouldn’t say it had a BIG influence.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: URM, low-income (talked about that in my personal essay), my letters spoke for themselves. My essay was really unique. Another college admissions personally told me how she really got to learn about me through it.
[] Weaknesses: Scores were definitely low.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My application was an organized packet. I played a lot of my main interests (journalism, French, the arts) and tied it to a lot of my essays and reccs. I also demonstrated overcoming challenges by mentioning some academic problems I had in high school in the “extra info” section of the Common App. I also worked hard through my first semester of senior year to increase some stats (all A’s so it bumped up my rank and GPA) to show colleges how serious I was about being accepted.
[*] The most unique thing in your application: A few pages of my art portfolio.[/ul]

[] The most unique thing in your application: Big Rice essay and interest in philosophy (?)

I’m so so excited!! I think this is probably where I’ll go! As for those waitlisted/rejected–its rough but don’t worry, you will have a great experience wherever you end up!

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:scores were pretty good,

[li] The most unique thing in your application: shirtless pic, newspaper interview from chess nationals 2004, recs from good people[/ul]
[/li]

joking about the shirtless pic, but I seriously am the sexiest man alive.

my friend with a 2400, 3 subject test 800s, taking multivar calculus, USAMO qualifier, district level swimmer got wait listed, so I’m pretty sure college admissions is a crapshoot anyway. he certainly deserved to get in before me.

[] Summer Activities: working, and 2010 and 2011 - summer class about politics at Georgetown
[] Essays: I’m quite proud of my common app essay. About the Rice Supplement though… I was unhappy about the question because I felt it almost coerced you to write about ethnicity/religion. My essay, while well-written and reflective, was sort of a dig at the essay question itself. Well, I guess they weren’t offended
[] Teacher Recommendation: Good as far as I know

Comments: I received 27K/year in the Trustee Distinguished and Century scholarships. Super psyched! I got a much better aid package at Vandy though (heard early, not ED), so I’m not sure. My visit to Rice is probably pending March 29th reach decisions to see how many options I have, but they emailed to say they’ll reimburse airfare so I’d really love to go to Owl Days. I’m very excited and grateful! Congrats to allll

[] Teacher Recommendation: AP Physics teacher; he’s had me for 2 years. He’s a great guy and I know he wrote a good rec.
[] Counselor Rec: If it was only “ok”, I’d be happy! She is the most unhelpful counselor in our school (and even the others are hardly great). I’ve only talked to her twice and both times were awkward and unhelpful. One time I asked her about merit scholarship opportunities and she literally told me that schools ONLY offer scholarships for athletics…then she sent me off with an index card with “collegeboard.org” written on it.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, from CT if that counts as one…?
[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: I don’t really know if I even had any strengths, honestly. I thought that MAYBE being from CT might have been a small strength? Especially since most people from my area haven’t even heard of Rice.
[] Weaknesses: My GPA and SAT scores were obviously way too low.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I just don’t look great on paper compared to all of the other applicants.
[li] The most unique thing in your application: Nothing, really!
[/li]

General comments: I was really upset about the rejection but pretty much expected it. I thought that being an URM might help me a little, and maybe even being from CT. Most people in my area haven’t even heard of Rice. I definitely was not shocked about the rejection, but saddened nonetheless! I obviously just didn’t have the GPA or SAT scores to make the cut. I would’ve loved to have attended Rice, but I’ll keep holding onto my faith for Carnegie Mellon, my true dream school. Congrats to those who got in, and to those who didn’t, keep your heads up! You’ll do great wherever you go. If I don’t get accepted to one of my reach schools, I’ll attend UConn for a semester and transfer! :stuck_out_tongue: Good luck guys!

 • The most unique thing in your application: My Rice supplement essay. I worked hard on it (probably harder than my Common App essay), and I they must have ended up liking it.

I was awarded a Trustee Scholarship ($18,000/yr). I have yet to hear from Yale and Stanford, but I can’t see myself turning this offer down, especially after visiting during VISION weekend. This is almost certainly where I’ll end up, and I couldn’t be happier. To the acceptees: congrats! To everyone else: it’s a crapshoot. Don’t take it too harshly; it’s mostly about numbers and figures that have no bearing on your worth as an individual.
