Also, how is the question asking what new perspective you could bring to the community different from the common app question (#5) that asks about “what you would bring to the diversity in a college community”?

I would suppose that the Rice question would be more specific to the Rice community itself…

So you need to:
- Find a unique life experience that helped to establish a specific trait
- Talk about how that trait would affect the Rice community?

Good thing we have a long time to work on this, I always have trouble with these kind of essays.

Wow. It’s so surreal that the 2017 thread is already up and running. It feels like just yesterday that I was here, freaking out over these things.
I wish y’all the best of luck with the Rice admissions. It was certainly a roller coaster. Don’t forget to enjoy your senior year! (:

The biggest difference is probably that you have to answer the supplement’s question but can write about absolutely anything you want for the Common App essay ;)

And making it Rice-specific is a good idea.

Alrighty. Well, I didn’t answer that on the common app essay, but that sucks for anyone who did since they’re going to need to have two answers for the same question. Right now I have small seedlings for my ideas, but really not progress yet :(

The perspective essay is killing me. I’ve spent many late nights thus far brainstorming ideas that eventually end up in the trash. I think I have a good start with my Why Rice, though.

Hello! This might be a silly question, but is the supplement .pdf that they currently have on the website the one for the class of 2017? Thank you!

@dorodoro i believe that it is the supplement from last year but the questions do not change (as far as i know)

Hi! Are you all applying ED? My twin sister and I are applying RD to Rice, and I love it! I’m definitely applying as a BMEngineering major, and she’s going to go for something more in the arts, but I think we’ll both want to double major in theater or music. I’m so nervous to apply! Have you all only taken the ACT? I am taking it in October but so far we both only took the SAT once, as a practice without studying (she got a 2330, I got a 2140). I want to study this time and hope to break 2200, but she isn’t going to take an me standardized tests (for obvious reasons haha). Do most students apply with an ACT score rather than an SAT score? I’m from the northeast, so I don’t really know what’s common in the south :)

@universalgrammar, same issue here, except me why Rice essay still has nothing.

@dorodoro, that’s the supplement from last year, but I’ve heard it will stay the same.

@madisonEnosidam, I’m from the NE also and I’ve taken the SAT and the ACT both once. I did about 150 points better on the ACT so I’m submitting that, and taking it one more time. I don’t think the test you take matters, the divide between the two is probably 50-50 or 40-60. Also, I’m apply ED :)

Thank you universalgrammar and runallday4! :)

You will not be at any advantage or disadvantage by submitting the ACT instead of the SAT (or vice versa).

I’m kind of nervous. I’m getting the impression that # of applications is going to be going up a lot this year and the next. Just looking at the schools other people are applying to on CC, Rice is becoming pretty frequent :0

The supplement for 2013 is out on their website and it’s the same.

Anyone else start the common app?? :D

yes!! i made an account first thing in the morning but the Rice supplement is not available:( Do you know when in will come out on the commonapp? btw I am applying RD for BME. i am nervous because of my SAT 2 scores: Math II:800 and Bio(eco): 670. do you think it is a bad idea to submit these since i am applying for bioengineering?fyi my sat scores and act are 2250(740 CR,750 math,760Wr), and 34. thoughts or suggestions??i would love someones opinion!!

Started the common app yesterday. Bummed that supplement is not up yet. I am SO NERVOUS because while I think my ECs are really good, “the numbers” aren’t up to snuff, at least not on the same level as you guys. As of now, Rice is the only school I am willing to bind to. Plan on majoring in EE or ME. Hopefully, applying ED will help my chances. We will see. Any thoughts on this?

I’m also very seriously considering Rice! I honestly am not that good at this college researching stuff, though…I haven’t really created much of a list nor do I know a whole lot about very many schools. I just don’t know how to go about researching these things. Among all the confusion, Rice has been the first school that I’ve actually felt a connection to. The location, residential college system, intense yet collaborative academic environment, and so on.

I’ve heard the campus is not that good looking though! Is that true? Is there any place I can see real shots of the campus? …since I have a feeling the ones on the website are, uh, specially selected haha.

Does anybody know if they’re still waiving the application for listing them as one of your top two on the National Merit stuff? I received a letter from Rice recently referring to the fact that I had listed them this way, but saw nothing about a waiver, which I have heard they have done in the past…
