Since Rice just released their decisions, I thought I’d post this now.

Accepted and very grateful. Scholarship as well $60,000 divided over four years. Praise God!
Decision: Accepted
Objective:
- [] SAT I (Comp, Essay, CR, M, CW): 1500 (760 CR, 740 M)
[] ACT (Comp, Essay, Eng, Math, Read, Sci): 35 (I can’t remember the breakdown)
[] SAT II (Type, Score): n/a
[] Weighted GPA (out of ??): 4.38/4 (now 4.45 but that’s after I applied)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 (but my school has around 70 valedictorians)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (4), US Gov (5), BC Calc (4), AB Calc Subscore (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Philosophy (5), Math SL (6), Psychology, French HL, English HL, Biology HL
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Stats, IB Psych SL, Chamber Orchestra, IB English HL, IB French HL, IB Biology HL, Theory of Knowledge
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, national essay scholarship recipient
Subjective:
[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): LD Debate (captain/coach 2 years), viola, wedding/event quartet (manager), university orchestras, youth orchestras, started 2 volunteer organizations (founder/president)
[] Job/Work Experience: Work as veterinary assistant, manage a quartet and play in it for weddings and such
[] Volunteer/Community service: Started 2 volunteer organizations (raising money for hospital and providing free music lessons), hospital volunteering
[] Summer Activities: Medical camps, music camps, work at vet clinic
[] Essays:
Personal Statement: Pretty good, talked about a very humiliating recital where I forgot my piece and how it tied to my uncle in hospice care. 9/10
Extracurricular essay: Talked about one of the organizations I started and the impact it had on me and the community. 7/10
Why school of study: Talked about how I want to go into bioethics and very specifically mentioned the majors I was interested in and the aims of those majors, how they applied to my goals, etc 7/10
Why Rice: talked about the great pre-med opportunities, happy students, creativity, and the Baylor program (with a quote, lol), unconventional wisdom 8/10
Perspective: Talked about my sister (who has autism), my regrets in how I treated her as a child, and how I improved myself and would show what she showed me to other people. My best essay, maybe even a 10/10
The Box: A picture of me and my brother studying in my room, which has pictures, music, and miscellaneous items all over the walls that kind of just summarize who I am.
[] Teacher Recommendations:
Teacher Rec #1: IB Bio teacher (7/10). I did two small independent research projects with her, so she knew me pretty well, but not very well.
Teacher Rec #2: From my former debate coach (8/10) who offered to write me the rec before I even asked. I stepped up a lot after he retired and led the team in his absence, so he had a lot to write about, I think.
[li] Counselor Rec: 7/10. I’ve talked to her a decent amount, so she knows me fairly well, but I go to a large school.[/li][/ul]
Other
- [] State: VA
[] School Type: large, public, very competitive
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: High, no financial aid
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none really
Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: I showed interest by taking a plane to tour the university and I worked really hard on my essays! I just found out I was selected to interview for the Rice/Baylor Medical Program, so I’m really looking forward to that!
