Rice Class of 2023 ED Discussion Thread

@messifan Yes, see answers above. My daughter interviewed with an alum in our hometown in Illinois.

@Houston1021 Now that ED is over, question for you?

Have you heard Rice emailing ED applicant’s parents to ask if they are willing to pay almost all of COA before sending out Early Decision?

Does Rice send financial commitment email to every ED applicant or just small group that doesn’t qualify for any need and/or merit base scholarships?

I have not heard of this but my child did not apply early decision. Perhaps some others on the forum have some insight.

I am also very interested to know what @texaggie asked. We did not get any financial commitment email. My D is getting lots of almost free ride offers from other colleges, but no aid at Rice. Does it make sense for Rice to offer any merit aid to ED kids given that we are bound by the commitment ?

One of the parents on the Rice Parent thread commented on @texaggie question. That parent said, “As far as your second question is concerned, we did not qualify for need based aid and my daughter did not receive a merit scholarship, and we did not receive any financial communication from Rice before the ED notification.”

Students that apply ED to Rice sign the ED agreement. There is very little “melt” from ED admits. Occasionally someone reneges on the ED commitment because of finances, but that is rare.

Rice meets full need, but is very stingy with merit awards to ED and RD admits. Many students that attend Rice turn down generous offers elsewhere.

“Rice meets full need, but is very stingy with merit awards to ED and RD admits”
Understood. Taking time to digest reality !

@Houston1021 “ED to Rice sign the ED agreement” that sounds right.

I just couldn’t believe Rice(any college) would send additional email asking parents “can you pay for full COA” to continue with process of early decision. I think any email like that would be an embarrassing and highly inappropriate.

Oh well, Kid decided to submit RD after all. Not that anyone cares, I will reply with the result in April.

Good Luck Everyone.

@texaggie and all that apply to Rice RD, please update us when the decisions come out in the spring on the RD thread http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/2109973-rice-university-class-of-2023-rd-thread.html#latest

Good Luck to all of you.

For the one who was accepted, did you get letter in mail? We are in California, still waiting…

They are still reviewing our financial aid. They are now on X’mas break, and would not be back until Jan 2. The deposit is due on Jan 1. I guess, we will do the deposit without seeing the financial aid package. Daunting, but we are committed to Rice. Happy Holidays to everyone!

@jinl11 We are in Texas, we have not received anything.

@jinl11 I guess I lied… after I posted my earlier response, the mail from Rice came.

I hope the ED packages arrive soon and contain the financial aid information you are expecting. Happy Holidays to all of you!

ok, guess for those who didn’t receive yet, have to wait after Jan. 2. Happy holidays!

The acceptance package should arrive in the mail in the next few days if it hasn’t already. The admissions staff will be back in the office after the first of the year.

As most of Rice’s peer colleges don’t offer merit scholarships at all and cost more than Rice, Rice is likely the most affordable elite college option for upper middle class families with no or little need based aid.

I’m planning on applying to Rice for RD and was wondering if anyone knows whether or not Rice allows score choice for sat subject tests. Thanks!

They do! @casevee

@awesomepolyglot Thank you!!

Hello all…anyone know when Owl Days 2019 is? TIA!
