Rice... doesn't consider SAT Writing? :/

I toured Rice recently, and I was dismayed when an admissions officer there told me that they didn't consider SAT I Writing. I'm just a junior, but my SAT I scores are 690 M, 690 CR, 800 W. Since the W score is the only impressive one by Rice standards, I'm worried that their not considering it will hurt me. (Just CR and M is a 1380/1600, but all three sections is a much stronger 2180/2400). So, will an 800 W help make up for those other two sections if CR and M don't rise when I retake in the spring? Please help if you can! :D

Decrescendo,

Antarius said recently that Rice Admissions looks at writing scores. I haven’t checked the website (always a good place to go) but it’s certainly clear that writing scores count – just look at the Collegedata info:
[Rice University Overview - CollegeData College Profile](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=731)

Congrats on your very impressive writing score! I bet you aced your essay, too.
Strong writing abilities will give you a good boost for years to come.

As far as I have heard, they do look at the writing scores. I may be mistaken, but I am not sure why they would choose to disregard them.

If anyone knows differently, please let us know.

Thanks! Yes, I got a 12 essay and perfect MC, I was incredibly happy haha. I was confused when she told me that… since they report the scores on College Board and the admissions and statistics site on futureowls.rice.edu didn’t say anything about it. But she did tell us at the beginning of the presentation that she’s a new adcom, she just moved from New England, so maybe she didn’t know? :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks again.

Special congrats on your 12 – they’re pretty rare – just look up the stats. My Owl, now a very happy Rice junior, also got one. To get a 12, both readers have to give the essay a perfect score. I hope the adcom reads this thread.

Is it possible the admissions officer was saying the SAT writing score doesn’t let you out of the writing requirement at Rice? The English AP tests don’t, either.

For quite a while, after the writing section was first introduced, many schools decided not to take the writing score seriously – and just looked at the reading/math combo. This has been changing – and it seems to have changed at Rice.

I just want to add that while high scores are always very helpful, they’re only part of what goes into the decision process.

And, I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving is full of happy family time and lots of laughter!

Yes, they did not consider the writing section when I took it in 2006.
