I read somewhere that Rice considers the level of interest to be important:
On-campus session + school tour: fly 8000 miles from my country
Off-campus session in Dallas when I was in the States
Exchange emails with the Admission Office regularly
Contact the Alumni Office to reach out to a Rice Alumni in my country ( pretty much I made him like me and would recommend me to the school)
1 of 3 students from my country got accepted to the Rice last year is my friend (he sure will recommend me)
exchange emails with Economics Prof. at Rice about my on-going projects
I apply for aid ( my contribution is only around 15k-20k)
